Question re tuners on new ASAT Classic
I own three G&Ls of various vintages. Recently, I ordered a new ASAT Classic, which arrived this last weekend. Great guitar, but it has some differences with my other G&Ls. Rather than the chrome Schaller tuners that say "G&L", it has silver Sperzel tuners. Also, rather than the black plastic string tree, it simply has a metal one. Are these standard now on all G&Ls, or does G&L simply install what they have lying around?

Pretty sure those are 'new & improved' standard appointments… perhaps Sperzels are an improvement but that metal string tree looks cheap as.

Re: Question re tuners on new ASAT Classic
I think I actually prefer the metal trees on my newer G&Ls, if I can tell any difference at all.
And Sperzels are pretty much comparable with Schallers; I think the ratios may be a little different, but the engineering's good with either. I have both on various G&Ls.

Re: Question re tuners on new ASAT Classic
G&L has been using both Schaller as well as Sperzel tuners for years. This even goes back to the pre-BBE days. The string tree got changed over around mid-2010; the oldest ASAT with a metal string tree in my collection is from September 2010.Encinitastubes wrote:I own three G&Ls of various vintages. Re: Question re tuners on new ASAT Classic
Thanks. I recall G&L using both, I just didn't know what went in to the decision to use one or the other. The Sperzels have a different look; more modern. The metal string tree has a different look; more traditional. Kinda odd to see the pairing. Love the guitar, though.yowhatsshakin wrote:G&L has been using both Schaller as well as Sperzel tuners for years. This even goes back to the pre-BBE days.
