2012 ASAT uneven neck relief

Post by Paul Siewert »

Hi

Just a quick question.

I just purchased a 2012 G&L ASAT from Studio Gears....Brand New.

Got the guitar and changed the strings and adjusted the truss rod. I noticed that when I set the high E string neck relief dead flat ( no relief) , there is still neck relief on the low E string side of the neck at around .01"

My 2014 S500 does not have this...dead even each side. I had another 2012 Legacy that did have uneven neck relief like this ASAT

Sighting the neck, the neck does not appear twisted. The fingerboard is dead parallel with the body.

I have read that uneven neck relief is ideal due to the different orbits of the strings. I understand Suhr PLEK's his guitars like this.

My Question is -Is this uneven relief a result of the PLEK process ?...considering both 2012 G&L's I have the same uneven relief...was this part of the G&L PLEK set up in 2012 ?

Thanks

I have similar mixed experience, and not just G&Ls.
Always a little more at the bass side if any difference at all, never the treble side.
As you say, a little bias this way is quite possibly a good thing (the other way round would be bad, though!)
Mine all set up and play / sound really well.

I can never be sure whether it's the neck, or the behaviour of the thicker string: it's much less flexible than the high E, and doesn't quite leave the first fret dead straight when capo'd for the relief setup. It has a very slight arch in it's first few mm. This is normal, of course, and happens at the nut and bridge too (though that's not relevant to relief measurement). I find that any capo setting that is buzz-free is enough to cause this slight curvature at the beginning of the speaking length of the lower string(s). My finger would almost certainly have the same result. This would slightly exaggerate the apparent relief at the bass side.

Never had a relief problem with a G&L, though. Very good to use.

Hi

Thanks for the reply....I was just curious then if this uneven neck relief is part of the PLEK process or not ( as with Suhr). My other Legacy HB 2012 also had uneven neck relief but S500 2014 has no uneven neck relief.

I suppose I was asking if G&L PLEK this in like other builders or did I just get lucky ?

See: What is G&L's Plek machine used for?

Hope this helps.

Craig

Thanks for that, but no mention was made of the PLEK putting in differential relief in the fretwork.

Maybe I just got luck and she might be twisting the right way ?. It means I can get super low action on the both E's without fret buzz in either string.
