Has anyone done A/B of Fallout JB pickup v. Tribute HB?

The place to discuss, post photos, video, and audio of the G&L products (US instruments, stomp boxes, etc.) produced after 1991, including the amps & gear we use with them.

Has anyone done A/B of Fallout JB pickup v. Tribute HB?

Post by fendertweed »

I posted this as part of a different question below but wonder if anyone has done an in-hand comparison of the Duncan JB bridge pickup in the USA Fallout vs. the G&L-designed split HB in the Fallout Tribute?

I don't have access to a USA Fallout to compare and am curious. The G&L HB sounds good, would love to hear if anyone can compare it to the JB.

Thanks,
Jon

Paul Gagon was the pickup designer for Grover Jackson and Jackson guitars during their heyday. He is an experienced and accomplished alnico pickup developer to say the least. All of the pickups on Tribute series guitars are wound in the US by G&L. The only reason they use and Duncan JB in the bridge for the USA is to set the model apart with name brand equity that comes with a Duncan JB. The Gagon humbucker doesn't give anything up to the JB and likely sounds better when coil tapped.

You want max out your Tribby for hard touring? Get some USA saddles and locking tuners, call it a day.

Interesting idea ... the Tribute HB did just fine at the first practices/gig I used it at. I think the pickup selector and possibly the pots/push-pull could use an upgrade but the pickup(s) sounded fine. The coil tap on the Tribute is excellent. I don't nec. need locking tuners on the Fallout but may consider the USA saddles & locking tuners. Thanks for the idea.

Jag only touches a little on Paul's past. Check out the Bio on Paul Gagon located on the main G&L website for more.
You will come to appreciate the pickups Paul has designed and built for G&L.
