USA Bluesboy - does Seth Lover have long legs?

The place to discuss, post photos, video, and audio of the G&L products (US instruments, stomp boxes, etc.) produced after 1991, including the amps & gear we use with them.

USA Bluesboy - does Seth Lover have long legs?

Post by NickHorne »

I recently acquired a very nice USA Bluesboy semi, #4 rosewood neck, which remained in tune (though deliberately a semitone down) whilst flying from NC to England. :luv:

A scare had gone round, a while ago, that the #4 neck might be discontinued; most worrying!
It was in this overwrought state of concern that I succumbed to GAS for this lovely little guitar.
I told myself that the humbucker, which I would not normally choose, was in fact substitutable by just about anything, but in the event I'm amazed by the clarity of the Seth. Very nice.
But I still would like to experiment a little.

Please may I ask whether the Seth in the Bluesboy has what Duncans call "Vintage long legs" (sounds good) or "Modern short"?

If any one of us knows the answer, I'd be grateful to know. Duncans CS themselves can't be sure which!

I realise I could just pop the 'guard off, but I don't like taking all 6 strings off at once unless it's absolutely necessary. Possibly OCD of me, but one can never be too careful..??

The pickup model is the Seth Lover Model™ SH-55 and according to the SD webpage [http://www.seymourduncan.com/products/electric/humbucker/vintage-output/sh55_seth_lover/]:
description
Designed jointly by Seymour and humbucker inventor, the late Seth Lover. Just like the original 1955 P.A.F.s, the SH-55 utilizes a nickel silver cover and long-legged nickel silver bottom plate, butyrate plastic bobbins, plain enamel wire, Alnico 2 bar, wooden spacer, and black paper tape. To be completely true to the original design and tone, the pickup is not wax potted. The tone is vintage P.A.F. The unpotted cover gives a slightly "honky" microphonic quality. Vintage style single conductor cable standard.
BTW, G&L orders them from SD wax-potted.

I've seen these pickups at the G&L factory prior to installation and they are "long-legged".

Hope this helps.

Looking forward to seeing photos of your new G&L. :searching: ;)

Thanks, Craig, very much for your thorough help!

I'm asking Duncans' CS to make a Seth pickup with 12 screw poles, for my string-balance fussiness, and 4-wire connection for a nice warm coil-tap-via-a-cap and also another nice combination with the back MFD in addition to Tim's original lovely Gretschy one.

Good to know the legs are long. I thought they might be, from the way the pickup stays steady in its mounting; less floppy than some.

As to pictures, of this guitar and its G&L sisters, I am guilty of living in a cave regarding web-hosted pictures. I will try to be good and make a start on it....
