help with neck specs

Post by sullysnet »

I'm new to the forum and wanted to know if anyone could help me determine the specs on my G&L ASAT. I think it is an ASAT Special but it doesn't say that on the headstock.
It's Semi Hollow with 2 wide single coil pickups. Serial is CLF24054. I love the neck and I am considering ordering another guitar either like this or a Strat shaped model.

I am the second owner. If you need other information please let me know.

Hi sullynet,

Welcome to the forum!

From the S/N is seems like you have a early-'00s ASAT Special. At that time no spec sheets were provided. So if you are not the original owner, or don't have the hang tag, there are a couple of options open to you to retrieve these data:
  1. Get out the calipers and measure! The results you can compare with the values listed on G&L's neck page spec table.
  2. Take of the neck and hope you find a scribble saying something like "#1" or "#2a", etc., on the neck heel, either front or bottom (I've seen it in either place). You might be lucky! In addition, you might find some more production data like dates in the neck pocket and on the heel. If you go for this option, it would be great if you could add your instrument to the Registry.
Hope this helps,

- Jos

thanks, I have the receipt some where. I bought it off my brother-in-law but I recall that the receipt didn't give me many details. I played this guitar last night at practice and I love
the neck so much that I wish I had 2 Strats types and one more ASAT solid body :) I found that is really great for certain songs compared to my Strats (Fender).

I will have the local shop tomorrow give me the details

If the receipt does not specify an optional neck size then the neck size will likely be a #2 neck, which was the standard neck for your ASAT Special Semi-Hollow.
See this post in the G&L Knowledgebase for specifics of the various neck options over the years: What are the USA neck size options, past and present?.

Just make sure that the dealer you order from specifies the neck number because the standard neck number on
current ASAT models and the s-body models is the #1. See: 2014-15 G&L U.S. Specifications and Options.

BTW, we'd love to see your ASAT Special Semi-Hollow. See Tutorial: Posting photos.

thanks I will post it once I get back from vacation :) I love the guitar so much.

The repair shop I go to said this about the neck. Comparing it to the ones in the list I am thinking it is closer to a Heritage C but I'm not sure. The numbers do not match up 100%

1 5/8 width
7 1/4 radius
.807 at first fret
.907 at 12 fret

thanks

The neck radius is 7 1/2". Since another (considerably larger) manufacturer offers a 7 1/4" board, I have not seen a 7 1/2" radius feeler, ever. So not surprising they mention the more common 7 1/4" number.

Nevertheless, I would agree with you it is most likely a #2b neck as you mention in one of your previous posts.

thanks, so that will be this one

2b G&L Heritage Vintage "C" C 1 5/8" 7 1/2" 0.790" 0.910"

Do you think this was a standard neck at this time or something the store ordered? I will post pictures when I return. Does this board post guitars for sale? I am trying to sell another one I have (different neck) and not having much luck :(

thanks

Please refer to this post (I mentioned previously): What are the USA neck size options, past and present?.
You will see the neck options which were available for 1998-2008 build years. The #2 neck was the standard neck for your model.
I agree that the current #2b neck option will be the closest match to your 2000 or 2001 (build year guesstimate) ASAT Special SH.

We do have a Marketplace, see: Welcome! Read This First

Hope this helps.

I just found the receipt, it is 2001 but no neck info besides Maple/Maple semi hollow (no fholes) the place that I will order it from, I will have them double check everything before I purchase it or
I will see if they have anything in stock that has that neck. Thanks for all the info. I'm looking forward to a solid body version of this same build :)

See this post in the G&L Knowledgebase: List of pickups used in G&L guitars.

Hope this helps.

thanks, what do you think gives my guitar that airy quality in the top end? Do you think it's the semi hollow or the pickup? Something about I love but I wish I could that same airyness but
in a humbucker for my Strats. Cost a lot of money to experiment on pickups!!!

thanks ....
