POTS

Post by Iplaythere4Iam »

I just got my Tribute Classic back from having a bone nut installed and a setup done and it sounds amazing! The tone pot is however, is still a bit scratchy. From what I have read that is pretty standard business with the Tribute. I was on G&L store site and saw three options for me. Can someone tell me please (like your talking to a third grader) what this means? Is there a preference. I mostly play Rhythm if that matters.

my options are
500KA
1megC
250KA

Lower value pots (250K) will bleed more treble to ground on '10' compared to higher value pots (500K, 1M)
Essentially, 500K and 1Meg will be 'brighter' on their fullest setting compared to 250K.

This is where the old saying '250K for single coils - 500K for buckers' came from. In reality, there's no 'rule' but manufactures decided that the padded high end of the 250K pots generally goes well with vintage style single coils, which can be very bright. Of course, in the 70's Fender used 1Meg pots on some teles, so it goes to show they will all 'work' everyone has different ears.

Personally, I prefer the higher value pots, because I think it gives the guitar more clarity and articulation. Plus, it's really easy to compensate with the tone knob, or at the amplifier, IMO. I figure that even if it is a little bright, it's easier to filter out frequencies that are there than it is to boost frequencies which are being filtered out by the guitar. In reality it's not 'adding' any high end, it's just attenuating less high frequencies that are already being produced by the pickup, and allowing them to reach the output of the guitar.

I believe the ASAT classic uses 250K pots. Unless you feel as if the guitar is already too piercing, I dont think raising the value will hurt anything. Actually, being a rhythm player, you might prefer the effect of a higher value pot.

Don't use the 1meg C ! "C" is reverse log, which G&L use for the bass control of the PTB circuit. It will do strange and useless things if used as a regular "tone" (i.e. treble) pot.

500k log should brighten you up a bit!

Going further afield, a "no-load" pot, which disengages completely at "10", will do even more, while retaining a normal-feeling tone control for the rest of the sweep. Try Allparts for these.

Why not just squirt some contact cleaner into the pot?

They were cleaned with cleaner during setup. As I mentioned above, the Scratchy pot is pretty normal and unable to be cleaned on the tribute. G&L sent new pots to replace them under warranty when the issue was identified. I am 3rd or 4th owner so not covered. Its okay thought its a 6$ part and some thing I will not need to worry about going forward.

Hi,I am Ben from Edinburgh,Scotland

I am new to this forum and have recently purchased a Tribute ASAT Classic number 04013055

I purchased it second hand and am very happy with it but the volume pot is very scratchy and cuts out anytime I lower the volume from full.

I have used Servisol Super 10 contact cleaner and lubricant on the pots but the problem still exists. Its driving me mad!

Can any of you G&L aficionados recommend a remedy to this problem.

Im sorry if i have posted in the wrong place.

Kind regards

Might be as simple as replacing the pot.
