Hello All,
I'm strongly considering going after this G&L Legacy -
https://reverb.com/item/291667-g-l-lega ... atin-frost
It comes with the 1c Modern U neck - this is one of the things that has enticed me about this specific guitar.
Unfortunately, it seems impossible to find a store that carries G&L and also has a guitar with a 1c Modern U neck (especially in Canada). I'm hoping that someone can please educate me a bit about this neck. I am hoping that there are a few people out there who have played these necks. I know that it's hard to describe the 'feel' of something in words, but I would truly appreciate any input!
My frame of reference is -
- the #1 neck on my G&L Fallout (Tribute Series)
- the U-shaped neck on a Fender Classic Series '70s Strat (MIM)
I loved the feel of the U-shaped neck on the Classic Series '70s Strat. I am also aware that the neck on that Strat had a 7.25" radius and vintage-sized frets - but it was the profile of the neck that I loved (not the feel of the fretboard in particular).
Anyhow, any input would be much appreciated!
Ryan

Re: G&L 1c Neck - Modern U
Ryan, I just tested my Classic with a 1c against a standard 1 neck. To be honest I really cannot tell a difference. I rest my thumb on the back of the neck and do not wrap my hand around the neck so that may be part of it. I will say that I have an SC-2 with a modern 7.5 radius and vintage frets. I find that it is extremely easy to play and I think the vintage frets are easier to play for a person with a light touch. I also have vintage Fender style necks with vintage frets that I feel the same way about. If I were to order vintage frets I would order stainless as they would last much longer. I know that this doesn't answer your question but I think the vintage frets and 7 1/4 radius may enter into the feel more than one may think. -- Darwin

Re: G&L 1c Neck - Modern U
Thank you for the feedback Darwin - I appreciate it. Based upon the bits of information that I have been able to gather, most folks don't seem to discern much of a difference between the #1C (U-shape) neck and the more 'standard' #1 (C-shape) neck. I do quite like the #1 neck on my Fallout Tribute - and I think it's probable that I'd like the #1C neck even better (though, as you said, the difference may be nearly indiscernible).darwinohm wrote:Ryan, I just tested my Classic with a 1c against a standard 1 neck. I'm usually pretty aware of the neck profile that I'm playing - though, with that said, I'm also quite 'equal opportunity' about them (though I'm not a huge fan of V-shaped necks). I think that I'm usually able to separate the profile of the neck from the feel of the radius/frets - although, I could simply be wrong about that! As you suggested, I'm sure that the sum-of-the-parts really shapes the overall experience/feel.
Anyhow though, long story short, I pulled the trigger on the Legacy and I am EXCITED! Watch out for the NGD Thread in a week or two!
