Hi!
My name is Mike, from Philadelphia.
I've been playing bass for about a year now - the last eight months primarily on a SB-2 Tribute. I've got a host of grown-up nonsense that prevents me from playing as much as I'd like, but I'm coming along slowly-but-surely.
My holiday present to myself was a brand new LB-100, which should (in theory) be winging its way to my dealer from Fullerton any day now.
I've still got a ton to learn - my goal is to by-and-large lurk on the site, taking in all that I can, so that someday I can start providing answers myself.

The bass has come in, and it's absolutely bonkers. It plays and sounds like a dream, and it's as pretty as can be. I can hardly put it down.
I've been waiting to post pictures until I get a sunny day here that will light it properly. So far my lighting choices have been "nasty incandescent bulb" and "soup gray snowstorm daylight." No bueno.

Bummer about the lighting. I sectioned part of my basement off to be a music room last summer, and can't find a single place in it where light fixtures won't be reflected in pictures. I've been holding off on my own NBD post until I can get some decent photos.
What do you think of the LB-100's tone compared to the SB-2's neck pickup?

Welcome Mike, I missed this one. Another bass player here. The LB100's are cool. I have never played one but they sure look nice. I am curious about the difference in tone between it and the SB. Looking forward to pictures when the weather cooperates and also my new starp has shipped. -- Darwin

The SB-2 is a blaster of a bass - if you single the split pickup, it's hot as blazes and very treble-y - so much so that I had to do some kind of weird EQ shenanigans on my amp (Markbass JB Players' School) to get it to sound clear. That said, it cut through like a razor. I'm absolutely holding onto this bass as a backup, it's so great to play - the neck is so playable, I had them throw the same one onto the LB-100.darwinohm wrote:Welcome Mike, I missed this one. With my LB-100, I didn't have to go too far from flat on my amp EQ to get it to sound the way I wanted. I really like having a tone knob again, I'd really missed it! If the sound of the SB2 is like a hatchet blade (powerful, but in a north-south kind of way), the LB-100 is like a hammer (more compact and round).
The difference in materials and craftsmanship is mind-blowing. The ash is light years more articulate than the basswood, and I was honestly not prepared for the way this thing sustains. I hit the open 'E' and started a timer, and I actually stopped the timer after twenty seconds so I could start playing again.

I love the Clear Orange/rosewood/cream pickguard look. Are those the stock control knobs?

Believe it or not, it's actually the honeyburst finish - I think it may be a darker example, but it looks great with the guard and the rosewood.KenC wrote:I love the Clear Orange/rosewood/cream pickguard look. Are those the stock control knobs?

I'm actually a nutjob, and I don't like knobs without multiple reference points on them - I pulled the knurled knobs off, and put on '72 Tele Custom knobs from Bass Parts Resource. Makes it easier to replicate a volume/tone combination that I dig.
The factory knurled knobs, as far as I can tell, are milled aluminum - they're still an all-metal knob, but way lighter than the ones I pulled off of my MIM Fender P-Bass - a very thoughtful touch.
