pickup question

Post by dhw »

I happened into a tribute asat classic semi hollow over the weekend. It sounded good and the guy really wanted an acoustic I hadn't played in a year so I traded up. It's not a bluesboy but the pickups don't match and thing else I see pictures of in the asat classic tribute line. They say g&l and have the mfd patent number on them but they are not humbucker config and are not narrow oval like most I've seen. They are rectangle with rounded corners. About half again as wide as the single coils in my stray. Single row of poles down the middle like a p90. What did I end up with? Mean sounding sob is all I know lol.

From your description, it sounds like you are describing a Tribute ASAT Semi-Hollow, which have two G&L MFD Jumbo Single coil pickups.
A photo will confirm this, so please post a photo of your guitar. For posting instructions, see: Tutorial: Posting photos.

What are the first four digits of the serial number?

I am in Minnesota. I found that pickup in the g&l store and that is indeed it. I'm on my phone so can't post a picture at the moment. It's a very nice instrument finished in a 3 tone burst. The first 4 of the serial is 1204.

Okay, I can see why you thought it was an ASAT Classic SH. The neck on your guitar is from a Tribute ASAT Classic and the body is from an earlier year Tribute ASAT Semi-Hollow.
The Saddle-Lock bridge has the Tribute stamped into it, which would indicate a body build year prior to 2010.
That explains the 2012 build year on the neck. The Tribute ASAT Semi-Hollow model was discontinued in 2010. My guess is that a previous owner wanted a Maple
fretboard, but the Tribute ASAT Semi-Hollow models only came with a Rosewood fretboard.

Thanks for sharing these photos. When you get a chance please add your guitar to our G&L Registry.

Enjoy your Tribute ASAT Special Semi-Hollow.

Interesting... I should see if he has the original neck. I'm more of a rosewood or ebony guy though I guess everyone should have at least one maple neck.
