Sometimes You Have To Speak Out

Post by darwinohm »

The forum has been unbelievably quiet of recent. almost scary. We need a shot of something.

I have been doing my fall maintenance and have completed about 30 guitars in the recent weeks, new strings, complete setups, and a test drive on the AC-15. I have been re-bonding with them and it is like getting new ones again. Some really stand out and that happened again tonight. Of the many G&Ls I have completed, I always hang it in the living room and tell Ginny, "boy, is this one special". She will always ask, what is it? The one I did tonight is really special. It is my Asat Z-3 with the Bigsby. Restringing a Bigsby is a piece of cake, much easier than a wraparound TonePros. This guitar weighs in 6 Lbs 11 oz and suites me well in the weight category. When I plugged it in tonight I had forgotten how this thing sings. Last year I installed a WR bridge pickup in it. You can crank this thing to the max and no noise. These pickups are rich, articulate with nice overtones and anything but sterile. They cook in my opinion. For you folks who have not tried a Z-3, Comanche or a WR Z-3 you should try one if you have the opportunity. I cannot imagine what to dislike about these pickups. I will also tell you that this guitar does not have tuning issues. Pretty much a perfect guitar in my opinion. Here are some photos and if you get the urge to post some more porn, please do so. I think the forum needs a jolt or something. Maybe I will have a shot of something!-- Darwin

Hi Darwin,

Thanks for posting that. Things have been too busy here for me to do any guitar maintenance lately, but I do plan to do a string change on one of the basses and swap the recent MFD in my '86 SB-1 for the original Schaller this weekend. I also need to take some photos for a very belated NBD post.

Your Z-3 looks great. I haven't had a chance to play Z-coils yet. The one I want to try first though is the bass version used on the L-5000. I will get a chance to try a Z-3 or WR someday, hopefully.

Hi Guys,
I'm sort of off topic but here's a pic of my SC-3's and Ascari with my new amp setup. Its a $200 Randal RH50T all valve, L34's, its in perfect condition, and Blackstar 2x12 cab loaded with Eminence Man o War and Governor speakers. I got the cab off Jon for $300 and he threw in the original Celestions too, another great bargain. The combination sounds absolutely fantastic for the money. A clip of Jon demoing the speakers is at this site. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3PPwnFRRIa8
He plays a great tune which im working on now,,, give me strength,,, its bloody hard,,lol

Here's your pics inline, often using the "open image in new tab" will give you access to the url of only the picture....
or "copy image url" will work too.

This is a nice pic!

I gotta ask, how many times did you poke your finger with the string ends ?
For me, it's getting better...though I occassionally get that free unscheduled acupuncture bonus experience :o

I'll get some pics up of some G&L-ish winter projects soon . I've restrung a few, I'm still in love with the TI powerbrights,
you should try a set if you haven't.

mornin' ! :)

Ken, I didn't know they had a Z bass version. I would love to see one.

Thanks Will, I am on the watch for a WR in the future. Your WR bridge was a great addition to the standard.

Geoff, nice looking family!

Elwood, no pokes but I have to say the most difficult too restring is a Tone Pros wraparound bridge. Also locking tuners make it a breeze. The high E can be a problem to get started on some of the other tuners. Has anyone out there tried Steinberg tuners. If so, what is the report. -- Darwin

Darwin yessirreee it's been a little quiet and thanks for reminding me of needed maintenance and waking us up with yer Z3!

Love the guard on that color. You know my love for Z coils and this just reminds me I truly NEED as SH ASAT with F Hole. You should get that WR ASAT, those gitars rule. :alright: Mine gets more play even with the recent ASAT mods.

The Bigsby looks like twanging fun. I haven't had much exposure to playing a Bigsby, but am a Duane Eddy fan so I might be able to get the hang of it.

Here's a peek into my Z coil attraction.

that WR studio IV is sweet !! .... a whole bunch of purdy Z's in this thread ......... I been lurking and not posting , been busy practicing the songs we are recording , I'm still a little behind on some of the songs so trying to get them down before we record ..... I do have a new number 1 on my list of G&L's , my Fallout took over number 1 spot while dropping the Broadcaster down a spot to number 2 :) , I just could not go without the Fallout now , the Satin neck is totally polished smooth and shiney from my hand

Darwin,

Your collection keeps it hot in Minnesota! Looking at that guitar reminds me that I would like
a lefty Z. Here are a couple pics I added to the Gallery:

WR, interesting combo in the sampler. There are some good ideas from you and Sam on different Z-combos'. The Turquoise Sparkle is super cool. Thanks for pictures. This ought to wake 'em up!

Minneapolis Will, That is a beautiful Blues Boy, double bound to boot with one of the best colors ever. They don't get much better. It may be super cool with a Z in the middle. We could use some heat around here, it seems like it has been winter forever. Thanks again Will. I would almost turn lefty to play that one. -- Darwin

Eric, are you folks recording in a studio or doing it yourself? If doing yourself what tools are you using?

I have had the same experience with satin necks with glossing up. I prefer the thicker gloss finish for that reason. The only alternative is to sand a bit and it won't be long before you are playing on the wood surface. -- Darwin

we are recording in a garage that's dedicated to the band ....Carvin PA and a Roland recording mixer is what he's recording on ..... I'm all new at this but it's pretty neat and boring at the same time ...lol .... boring when we are redoing certain parts , forever .....

What they are trying to achieve is giving us all the same CD exactly how he wants us to play to practice on ..... the cover songs we do have a Metal twist on them so there different than the originals artist plus our original songs are from a few years ago when they tuned a whole step down where now it's a half step down , so trying to practice with some songs half step , some whole step , drop D a half step down , drop D a whole step down , some covers were in standard tuning .... it literally took 5 guitars to practice our play list ...... once done recording our own CD I'll only need two different tuning for a half step down tune and a half step drop D tuning and all the songs will be how we play them , we should get tighter as a band when we are all listening/practicing to the same CD ..... seem like no two of us had the same practice CD's making it confusing when we played together

Thanks, again, Darwin, for the eye candy. The ASAT sh Z3 w/bigsby is a beauty, and i've got a thing for transparent red finishes. Some day I'll get a comanche and check out these z-coils. none of the stores around here have them.

I was thinking about "fall maintenance." My G&L's are pretty new, and have been getting alot of playing time this year, to the exclusion of my others. I realized it had been more than a year since i'd played my les paul, at an outdoor gig on a drizzly day.
I broke it out this wkd. It had some rust on the non-wound strings! I polished it up and restrung it and got reaquainted. What a beauty, sounds and plays great - I haven't adjusted the truss rod since some time in 1977! Might be taboo to post a non-G&L, but i'll put up a few photos if anybody wants a look.

Thanks John, by all means post a picture of your LP in this thread. We would love to see it! I change string once a year on the guitars that get little play time. Also a good time to de setup and waxing. -- Darwin

As long as there is also a G&L instrument in the photo, too. ;) After all this is the "G&L Porn!!!" sub-forum.
If you want to post the LP by itself do it in the General Music Discussions sub-forum.

Hey drjho7,

The burnt guitars were fantastic jobs by Mac Whiteside in Austin Texas. He used to post occasionally on the old site, great guy but busy lately.

Mac has a secret method of using the Texas heat to dry guitars and special flame thrower to burn these to a perfect finish. Amazingly doesn't kill the pups in the process.

For us partscaster junkies he is one of the best. He's helped me on a few and many for Will.

flamethrower...guitar...cool (no, hot!)! thx for the info.
the effect is totally unique, certainly one of a kind guitars. as opposed to the LE-2's: "roasted body".
Jimmy Hendrix pioneered the idea, he has taken it to the next level :smoking030:
