A different ASAT

Post by GDub »

Have a look a the ASAT Bryan Kehoe is playing in this photo:

Image

I've been trying to find a better pic, but no luck. I ran into him at a festival were both playing on the same day last summer and asked him about it. He said he had it custom made to spec. Two single coils with a humbucker in the bridge. I don't remember if the singles were MFDs or not.

Here's the video the pic came from (he was doing a goofy demo of the MXR Talk Box so the guitar isn't fired up and smokin' hot a la Kehoe, but at least you can see it a little better):

It looks like an ASAT III with a bridge HB pickup.
First production run from 1988 to 1991. Guitars from this first production run are rarebirds; see the ASAT III: Rarebird page on this site for more information. Second production run from 1995 to 1998. Ash body (1988 to 1991 as standard, 1992 to 1998 on premier finished guitars), alder body (1992 to 1998 as standard), ebony board (1988 to 91), maple or rosewood board (1988 to 1998). Fitted with three S-500 MFDs using standard ASAT circuitry. A few were made with an optional G&L MFD GHB humbucking bridge pickup.
[Reference: List of Regular Production ASAT-style guitars (USA)].

Perhaps it originally had the MFD GHB HB pickup and was later changed to a Seymour Duncan pickup.

The picture looks like it was take at a NAMM show demo.

Thanks for posting a Rarebird sighting (slightly customized).

Thanks Craig, but I'm pretty sure this is a fairly new G&L--made in the last couple of years--not a NOS, slightly modified rarebird. I'm also pretty sure he said G&L made it for him. Maybe the photo will jog someone's mind at the factory.

And yes, he demos and does interviews for Dunlop, so it could have been a NAMM show.
