How Sweet It Is - Reaquaintance

As the cold weather sets in, I start doing my annual fall guitar maintenance. I have done about 10 in the last 3 weeks and I purchased this one in early 2010, brought it home and plugged it in for a bit and it hit the wall immediately. I decided that it was time to take a serious look at this one today. It is the F-100 Return Edition and I have #21 of 100. When I check the registry only 14 have been registered and some of them appear to be in stores and the highest number in the registry is # 48. Jos has one of the first ones. I have other Custom Creations but this model was out of the park in my opinion and I wonder where all the others from the 100 are.

I did a complete setup, cleaned and polished and oiled the ebony board a bit. Keep in mind that this is basically an unused instrument. The strings had never been changed. As I recently posted I have a Vox Ac15 and it has become by far my favorite amp here at home. I test all the ones I setup recently on the AC 15 and that is kind of the benchmark for comparing my guitars, I don't change the settings on the amp. It is interesting to hear the differences.

I plugged the F100 in and WoW!. The buckers on this baby are hot. I had to turn the volume down to 2 as it was so loud with the volume and gain at midpoint on the AC 15 (clean Chanel) It was overdriving the amp at anything above 2. It overdrives very nicely and the output is lower and more single coil sound in split mode. This is quite a guitar and would seem to me to work for most anything a person would need. I always play clean and this is the first accidental overdrive I have run into. I don't have many buckers but none of the others are quite like this. I would not take it out but I have quite a few that don't leave home. Again I mainly gig bass so I don't normally take any of them out. You have a gorgeous guitar there. The Return Edition looks completely different from the original F-100s, but the concept comes together nicely. It reminds me a lot of the original ASAT Classic Custom model from 1996, with the clear red finish on the top, opaque back and sides, and natural binding.

Great write-up, beautiful pics, and a stunning top on yours. On mine, I have similar experiences as you with these MFD re-issue buckers. The 25th Anniversary Limited Edition, on which these pups reappeared first, behaves pretty much the same too. Both are true rocking' gee-tars.

Thanks for the comments folks. Ken that Classic is sweet. I replaced strings and setup a couple of my other G&L's yesterday and it is really good to get intimate with them. One was the 30Th Aniv classic which is one of the classiest G&L's ever built in my opinion but the SC2 was an eye opener. Mine has a 7.5 radius with vintage frets. It is like it plays itself. I gave Ginny the "Boy, this is a sweet guitar" which she has heard countless times. I checked out my Z-3 with the gold plated hardware this morning and it is also stunning. How can a person have this much Fun??????? We are short of porn on this forum recently. I miss it. I'll start a couple for the day!-- Darwin

Glad to see your "reaquaintance" was such an eye opener. I recall when those came out and was very interested in thise pups just wish Darth had put them in an ASAT. Also sounds like yer new AC 15 is getting a workout too. Keep the reviews coming and enjoy that F100.

Darwin, if you ever need a house sitter, let me know. It would have to be for a week or more tho... there is no way I can get a chance to play all that candy in just a few days!

That flame trio has caught my eye before. What a great looking stage presence that would have. I would have to learn some serious rockabilly if I owned it. Someone put a lot of time in the finish process.

Thank you Fianoman, you would be welcome to test drive them! I talked to Ryan Gadow a couple of weeks ago and he did get the amp from Valve Train unfinished and did the paint work along with the guitar as a set. It is really a group of artwork in my opinion. I happened to come across a photo showing the sides of the amp set. Here it is and have a happy Thanksgiving everyone. We sure did! Every one gets better. -- Darwin

Thanks Greg. Winter here in Minnesota has already been long. Guitars are the perfect hobby this time of the year. I restung and setup four more this weekend. I test them afterward and it is fall in love time again, just like getting a new one.-- Darwin
