Should I Get This Comanche? Need Help!

Post by SixBladeKnife »

Hi All,

Nice to be here :-) I'm considering a Comanche. I'm wondering what you guys can tell me about it, I've spend hours looking for info, but can't find much.

Looks like ash, possibly 1 piece? Excellent condition. Any opinions on what a fair price is? Any idea what year model this is?

Sorry for the low res photo. Thanks!

It's almost certainly Ash. It's possible that it's one piece but that's easier to tell looking at the end grain around the heel of the neck-pocket and the top of the 'horns' to see if it's continuous. Without the serial number I can't help you with age - some of the guys here may be able to, possibly. I'm in the UK and guessing you are not, values will be quite different. Using the search engine on the forum here will turn up lots of guys opinions about Z coil pickups - they are pretty universally liked.
That is a very beautiful guitar.

The body wood looks like Alder to me. That is the standard wood for Cherryburst. Also, the body is likely a two piece body.
If you can get the serial number, I can ask Dave to look it up and get some more details. If the case is the stock case shipped with this Comanche,
then it was likely built before 2010. In Feb 2010 they switched to deluxe fitted tolex cases.

Thanks for the info!

Craig, the serial is CLF34190. Any additional info is much appreciated!

I went ahead and picked it up today. Traded my 91 Les Paul Studio for it. I figure I got the better end of the deal, despite really liking that Les Paul.

I'll post some better photos of it in G&L porn in the next few days.

looks like swamp ash too me .... either way it's a beauty , I love my Comanche and plan on getting it out tomorrow to play , it's time for rotation , if the bridge pick up is too bright for your tastes you can get a Will Ray z-coil bridge pick-up from the on-line store for pretty cheap , it basically has 1600 more winds of wire than a Comanche z-coil , the extra windings really tones it down , there are a few of us on here that have the WR z-coil installed and love it even more than the regular z-coil bridge pick up

Hey SixBladeKnife,

Highly recommend you get that before it's gone. I have an ASAT Z3 SH and switched the bridge pup and love this guitar. BTW loved it so much I got a Will Ray signature as well. You will find z coils to be different but with some experimentation and a read through Boogie Bill's Commanche for Dummies you will be dialing in tone of yer own. Keep us informed and post more pics if you get her.

Congratulations! I think you definitely got the better end of the deal if it was a straight trade.

Yes, it was a straight across trade. I was thinking I'd walk away keeping my Les Paul, I wasn't prepared for how good the Comanche felt and sounded.

Craig, you called it, two piece body. Really hard to tell by looking at it except near the neck pocket. I still don't know about the wood though. Hard to tell for sure. I'm interested to hear what Dave has to say about it. Here's the serial again: CLF34190

Here's Dave's reply:
Hi Craig,

Bingo, got it. CLF34190 is a Comanche in Cherryburst, pearl guard, white covers, maple neck, shipped to German Village Music Haus in Columbus, OH on 9/29/04.
The default neck finish would Clear Satin and I believe at that time the default body wood on a Cherryburst Comanche would have been alder as it is today.
If there’s a pic we can tell for certain.

Thanks a lot, Craig.

Dave
Based upon the photos you posted, it does confirm that the body wood is indeed Alder.

Hope this helps.

Thanks a ton for getting that info Craig!

It all sounds spot on, though I'm surprised it shipped to Ohio! It's now in Houston.

I still can't get over how darn good this guitar plays and sounds. It's crazy! Also can't believe how quiet the zpups are.
