Noisy pickups on ASAT Custom Classic Custom

Post by JonnyMuck »

Heya,

Just inherited a ASAT Custom Classic this past year; are the pickups always this noisy (60hz hum) when connected to a Fender Blues Jr?
I noticed when I place my hand over the strings, the 60 hz hum tends to go away. The noise is amplified when running through a compressor (expected).

I appreciate the picking up Fender Strats with the noiseless pickups, are there any options for the ASAT Classic Custom?

I feel like there are other things besides the guitar which might be causing it.

Tested on both a working, grounded power outlet and not-so-grounded power outlet with same results.

Any info would be appreciated!

It might be a loose or broken ground wire on the guitar. See: problem noise with brand new asat classic..

Hope this helps.

Jon,

Which version of the ASAT Classic Custom do you have? The name was used for a short-lived production model in the mid-'90s ('burst or clear red finish, top binding, and regular ASAT Classic pickups), and also a more recent model that had an ASAT Special pickup in the neck position.

The first version would have a serial number beginning with "G" on the neck plate, and the second version would have a "CLF" serial number on the back of the head stock.

See this post in our G&L Knowledgebase for details on what Ken was referring to: List of Regular Production ASAT-style guitars (USA).

Please do add your guitar to our G&L Registry, too.
