ASAT Classic & ASAT Classic Alnico

Here are my two ASATs.

One the left, and ASAT Classic. My main guitar these days. Heavy as an ox but plays super fine. Natural gloss/wood finish.

The one on the right is an ASAT Classic Alnico. Vintage white. It's a great guitar except the jack cuts in and out with some of my cables. This guitar prompted me to get a few right angle Lava cables which work just fine.

You'll see here the ASAT Alnico has the nice arm and belly cut. I like it. If fits the body well.


Both are #3 necks. The Classic is registered and I'll register the other one soon.

I have a lefty Classic "S" and a Bluesboy 90 on order. When I get them the family will double! I'll post pics then, too.

Yes, the other two I have on order will be give me a whole new array of sound (Classic “S” and Bluesboy 90). It will definately be an ASAT family.

I like both of em but I keep coming back to this thread to look at that Alnico in vintage white. Man is that sharp.

So I've been thinking about the ASAT Classic Alnico and wanted to hear the difference between it and the ASAT Classic. I searched on YouTube but only found Classic S Alnico videos.

What's the tonal difference between the 2? I play classic rock & blues primarily. Would the Alnico work well for these styles, or should I do just the classic? Got any videos demoing the difference?

I don’t have any sound files to compare side by side. All I can say is that the Alnico as a little more high end bite. The regular Classic has a bit more balls to it. More “grrrrrrr”. The Classic is my main guitar right now in my band (most recently compared to The Replacements, Buddy Holly and The Clash). In fact, Friday night we had a gig and I received a nice complement on the “vintage” sound of my ASAT Classic (not my playing, just the sound of the guitar!)

Both guitars are great. But for me the Alnico a backup right now. Although I actually practice on it a lot.

If I was to have only one of them, I’d go with the Classic, but that’s also based on the music I’m currently playing. Since I think you have a Classic, how about a Classic "S"? I have one of those now and it's great. I'm slowing getting to know it.

As of now, my first pick for a new guitar would be a Bluesboy. I like the idea of a humbucker & the MFD. But I'm hoping if I do get it that it won't be acting like my ASAT has been lately.

I find I need to tune it daily as it just goes out of tune. I have the same strings on my MIM strat and that thing very rarely ever goes out of tune. And the jack hole on the bottom is still giving me the blues coming loose even after I tightened it up.

Other than that, I really like the ASAT. I just wish the neck pickup cover (if there is one) would be offered in other colors besides black. IMO a black pickup on a white/cream/mint guard ruins the aesthetic flow of the guitar. Chrome, not so much.

That heavy as ox part has been my problem with an ASAT classic I purchased from one of our members last year. It's the down side for me. I only wish they had stay with the smaller width in the body as in my 1988 ASAT, makes a real differents for me.

Having said that your Classic is a beut for sure. Looks versa wieght. In a women that could be bad, in a guitar, well just sayin'

Thank you! That is some of the nicest swamp ash I've ever seen. It reminds me of an early '90s SB-2 that was up for sale about a year ago. I had a very hard time resisting that one.
