Gibson guy buys a G&L! Joins forum...

Post by Turkish »

Hello from Pittsburgh. I'm sitting here staring at a new (to me) G&L Legacy. It's 1:30am. I should be asleep. I feel kind of like taking the guitar to bed with me but I'm sure my wife will have something to say about that in the morning.

I've been scouring the internet looking for information on how to determine if my USA Legacy I "won" on the big auction site is really a USA Legacy and my searching kept ending up on this forum so I decided to join.

I've already learned a lot of useful info about G&Ls here. Hopefully I'll be able to contribute a little too down the road.

Thanks!

Welcome and congrats on the Legacy. It is difficult to own only one G&L. You may be looking for more soon! -- Darwin

Hi Turkish,

Welcome, and let me answer your big question. Look on top of the headstock. If the guitar is an older Tribute, it will say so in big letters. If it's a newer Tribute, it will say so in small letters under the big G&L logo. You shouldn't need a magnifying glass, but you do have to pay attention.

Also, we run a registry: http://www.guitarsbyleo.com/AUTOREG/int ... istry_id=1 Then click on "Submit an Instrument"

Take care & have fun :)

hi Turkish, welcome to the forum!
Like you, I played only a les paul for 20 years before i expanded my horizons.
I worked my way through F strats and found my way to a tribute Legacy, which has been quite refreshing.
Alas, I have become infected with G&LAS (a variant of GAS), with which many on the forum are chronically afflicted.

Welcome! Change can be good. My Strat's are S-500's & a Legacy and my LP is a Parker.

Oh, and what Darwin, Fumble, John & Tim said...

Cheers,

Will

Thank all of you guys very much for the welcome! I'm really loving the Legacy. I'm still not completely comfortable with the way it feels...it still feels like someone else's guitar...but as far as tone goes, it's amazing. I put new strings on and what I quickly realized is that I have no idea how to deal with the DF bridge. I've only ever had hardtails. I put 10-52s on and the tension was pulling the bridge towards the pickups noticeably. I messed around with the vibrato/trem springs a bit and then had to re-tune. I got the bridge to lay flat and tuned properly but it took some effort. The string tension seems a bit stiff to me but maybe I just need to feel some 9s on it. I definitely want to get a pro setup done.

I posted pics in another thread but I'll put one here too. Thanks again everyone!

i use 10-46 on my legacy, and 10-52 on my 335. agree, setting up floating bridges takes some practice and patience.
i wonder if the heavier bottom strings cause any "lateral" asymmetry on the DF bridge on your legacy?

Nice to meet you and welcome to the forum (i actually joined after you, I'm the "another Les Paul guy buys G&L" post).

After playing LPs for years and wanting something different to complement it for clean tones and blues stuff, I tried all the strat type guitars from ibanez to fender to PRS to LTD, and the G&L definitely fit what I was looking for best in terms of feel, playability, quality and most of all made in the USA. Going by what many others have said here, I found the quality to be most consistent of the G&L's I played. Some of the other guitars look nice but just can't hold a tune. The G&L is an amazing find!

Enjoy!!
