Yep, it'll be my first G&L. I have A Rick, Strat, 2 Ovation Vipers (circa 1975's), and an Ovation 1617. I've heard a S-500 and was allowed to play it. Gotta have one.

Is there a source that shows the "finishes" available. I have seen a popping finish but now can't seem to find it. It is somewhere between aged cherry and ruby red. I would call it a flame red.

For the most up to date information, see the G&L Knowledgebase, General G&L Questions sub-forum, Current US G&L Body Finishes.

I have recently updated all the Current_* posts in the G&L Knowledgebase based upon the latest US Dealer's Price List which came out August 1, 2014.
At some point Dave will have the G&L website updated to reflect the latest information in the current Price Lists.

Welcome, Dave! I haven't seen or played an S-500 Delux, but I love my '82 S-500. That model has definitely stood the test of time!

I'd love to see pics of those Vipers. I had to suffer through my local shop having a pristine one a couple of years ago, just when I couldn't come up with the cash. I'm mainly a bass player, and an Ovation Magnum 1 is at the top of my non-G&L wish-list.

Depending on the year of that guitar you saw, you might want to look back through old color charts in the Gallery. Of course, with G&L there have been countless custom jobs and one-offs over the years.

Ok. Done my research, and need some advice. Binding...., is it going to look right with the S-500. On the models I have seen, it looks just fine, but those models aren't the S-500 series. I know it 'll probably be a chevy vs ford discussion, but I am leaning towards opting for it.

Depends upon which body color you want. Natural wood binding is the only option for the S-500, Legacy, and Comanche models.
On an S-500 Deluxe with the Maple top, they look great with a transparent finish. Here's an example of one:


One thing to consider though, is that the top edge where the binding is will have a straighter edge to it. See this post: Why are some Legacy's more straight at the edges?.

Nice choice, indeed! Once you get your dealer get's the order to the factory, keep an eye on the G&L Facebook page.
You might just see it on the factory photos page.

Nice choice, S-500 dlx is a VERY versatile guitar, you have to play a lot with the PTB, the vol knob and the pickups height.
Seriously, mine seems unable to sound bad... (At least within the styles I play : blues, funk, southern rock, jazz-fusion, experimental).
It makes me very confident when I gig, and that is a thing of primary importance to me.
It drives wonderfully the amp and pedalboard.

It was well worth it, yes indeed. This one has a mahogany back, with quilted maple top. I also got the wood binding. It really has a different voice than my strat. The more I play it, the more I appreciate it. Craftsmanship is two thumbs up. Thanks to all the advice I got here. What?.... maybe an ASAT in my future?

Congrats on your new guitar - she's a beaut! How does she play? And can you describe how she sounds different than your Strat? I just got a Legacy Deluxe myself (w/mahogany body & maple top) and never having owned a Strat hoped it would sound like one. Guess I just don't know what to expect and thought I'd ask.

In regards to the sound. My Strat's (American Deluxe) body is made of Ash. The S-500 is somewhat brighter in tone and more sustain. All of that is based on my ears. Maple can have a twangy, tenor sound, I believe the mahogany back along with the maple top gives you excellent highs and the mahogany gives you the lows with a nice transition in between. From my banjo experience Maple is bright, Walnut favors the lows, and Mahogany is in between. Probably more of an answer than you wanted.
