ASAT Collections

Post by yowhatsshakin »

It is true: you cannot have enough ASAT's.

In October of last year I published this pic that got me the LR nomination twice:
Image
L-to-R:
2006 ASAT Classic Bluesboy with spalted maple top
2004 ASAT Classic Bluesboy semi-hollow
1999 ASAT Classic
2004 ASAT JD-5
2001 20th Anniversary Model
2004 ASAT "Super"
2006 25th Anniversary Model

After my wife presented me with an amazing birthday present today, I'm proud to introduce the Second Seven:
Image
L-to-R:
1985 Broadcaster w/ ebony board
1992 Commemorative
1995 John Jorgenson Signature
1998 ASAT "Junior"
1998 ASAT Blues Boy (Special Edition)
2006 ASAT Trinity (Special Edition)
2009 C.L.F. Centennial ASAT

The present, you're asking? That blonde guitar on the right :happy0065:

Wow! That's quite the collection you have there. The last one looks right at home. Do you like the hardware on it and the metal pickguard guard? Your wife is a keeper! She bought you the Centennial? !!! Happy B'day!

To start at the end: yes she got me the Centennial. No clue where, since both the one I had been following on eBay as well as the one at Guitar Adoptions are still there. Since I had just bought the Blues Boy, Jorgenson Sig, and the Trinity, I haven't followed everything as closely as I use to, hence that would be my disclaimer. The eBay listing states there are only 3 in the US market, so is this the 3rd one? The guitar did not come with the chord and the CD, therefore I assume it is second hand. But all other stuff is there including the book! I can ask her the details but I don't really care or want to. Would just spoil the magic!

I love the aluminum pickguard. The red Trinity also has a black wrinkle powder-coated pickguard that Bob Page put on there and both of these guitars are noticeable quieter in the single pickup selection than my others. The in-between settings do not seem to make a difference between the aluminum and plastic pickguard guitars. And the Centennial has a kind of clarity to it that I have not heard before. Don't know whether it's the wood, the 7½" radius of the fretboard (most of mine are 12"), the hand-wound pickups, or the hardware, but this one rings like a bell. I wonder what the hell I'm doing behind the keyboard now and why I'm not playing guitar... ;)

The "Super" is what it is: Super! The pickups are overwound and have an enormous amount of bite to it. The neck pickup is one of the best pickups I've ever heard. One of the nice features is that the capacitor in the tone control circuitry is by-passed when you turn the tone control to 10. No highs are drained off in that case leading to lots of sparkle in the sound. But then again, if you want the Clapton like ‘mother’ tones, just turn the tone control down and there is plenty of sweetness coming out of the speakers.

:shocked028: Yow, that is some collection of Asats, Wow! Now if you had that many of each type of G&L you would be just about set. I would slip a Bigsby on at least one of those Asats and that would put you over the top! -- Darwin

Couldn't find the other threads where I posted my groups of seven. So I revived this thread, fixed some links etc. and decided to post the rest here too. So first some repeats. But I'll add links to any recent and relevant LR or Porn!! posts for these guitars so you can see more pictures.

Have fun!

OK, finally the reason for going through all the trouble above. I received a very special prototype from jonc late last week which brought the ASAT count to 49. Time to post another group shot again. And hopefully we'll have some time to focus a bit more on some of these beauties in the near future through an LR.

The 7th Seven (milepost reached July 2014):

L-to-R:
2013 ASAT Classic Solamente
1991 Lacewood Commemorative #1
2006 Z-12 ‘Big Red’
2000 ASAT Z-3 Semi-Hollow (2001 Winter NAMM guitar, 2001 G&L catalog)
2007 Will Ray Signature model
1987 'CavASAT' prototype
2013 Savannah Collection ASAT Classic Bluesboy 90

Love those ASAT'S :alright:

You keep giving me new ones to look for. Gotta say the Super, a semi-hollow Bluesboy and a 20th Anniversary are next on my list.

Man I hate the way this forum's frames unpredictably navigate you through side windows and back staircases. I think I just came through a sealed off restroom to get back here after clicking on one of those pictures. :shocked028:

The ASAT Cavalier prototype, is that an S-500 sized MFD pickup in the neck? That one grabs my interest on many levels. What a smorgasbord.

Absolutely true Eric. He has provided me with some hard to find instruments now. Was a great surprise (and honor) I was offered the ASAT 'Cavalier' prototype; for a large part because only about a year ago I even became aware of its existence. And she sound beautiful. But more about that in an LR in the near future.

Salmon,
The neck is an 'ordinary' wide-bobbin MFD neck pup as used on the SC-2, Broadcaster, and ASAT. The bridge pup as far as I know is a HG2-R "Angled Offset" pup, better known as the pup used on the Cavalier and (one of the versions for) the Interceptor. Which is why I dubbed this guitar the ASAT 'Cavalier' prototype myself although to my knowledge nowhere it is actually referred to that way.

My super is the best of my bunch, for the reasons you mentioned. I wouldn't say it is the best playing but sure is the best sounding. I hope others don't get hip to it. Wait, did I just say that out loud?.......

Jos, what do you think of the Bluesboy P90? If you can say in words, how does the P90 compare to the standard ASAT Classic? If you have a sound sample, that be even better. ;)

Thanks. Great collection. Wow.

Jos,

I'd be interested to know the cap value on that ASAT Super circuit. The SC-2 I have is loaded with the same pups, it'd be nice to have the same capability on the tone control.

Thanks. Great collection. Wow.
This is what I wrote on my web site for this guitar:
" Acoustically, the guitar sounds very resonant. When plugged in, the neck pickup has warmth and bark at the same time; the neck pickup has the well-know characteristics of any ASAT Classic neck pup and together they sound great. But I do notice a slight difference in volume between the 2 that you have to work around a little. Just like for the Korina Collection ASAT Junior II, the tone-stack on the amp needs to change just a bit for optimal results."

Just to be clear, the volume different I'm talking about is for the neck and bridge pickups by themselves not for the middle.

Hope this helps,

As of recently, Lacewood #1 for its historic relevance. Before that it would be my first ASAT, the Butterscotch Blonde ASAT Classic.

An amazing collection Jos and I'm honored that you have found a place for some of my babies in your realm. The prototype isn't the prettiest but is very special and historically important with its experimental wiring. While the Z-2 pays homage to Tim Page who thought a 2 pup "Z-SAT" would be the ticket. It didn't turn out that way but the results were, and still are very impressive. Btw, you have seen this pic of Leo holding a Z-SAT (and more than a few others including some real rarities I would have loved to own). In any case, no pun intended, you're keeping the flame alive in a huge way and perhaps you will be the one to open that museum. Which was one of my dreams but will now have to join the realm of what might of been. So make it happen and I'll bequeath my L1k to you. ;)

Yes, the S-500 uses a small "Strat style" MFD while the ASAT uses a large or what we've come to think of as a standard or "Soapbar" style MFD. You can see the differences on the PUP chart that's in the archives.

No. The cap is between the wiper and one leg, and the resistor is from the other leg to ground.

Thanks. I appreciate the response. I deliberately asked instead of trying to figure it out with the chart because I like the interaction with people here. That and being a prototype it would have been tedious to figure out what was in it, especially because I thought it looked like a smaller MFD in the picture.

Thanks again.

Great pic Jon. That "Z-SAT" of course whets my appetite. And then there is that gold hardware ASAT Signature on the wall that looks like an ASAT III SSH put without the middle pup. Very nice too. And I might take you up on that promise although I already have a wonderful '83 fretless 'Wunkay':
