SB-1 Neck Profiles

Post by MarshallDragon »

Hello,

I am contemplating purchasing my very first G&L Bass. I own 2 Fender Jazz , was thinking of getting my first Precision but I figured I would go for the most recent Leo Fender designed P bass by getting a SB-1
As a fan of the Jazz Bass neck ( 75 RI for example ) which neck profile would you recommend ? I was thinking G&L Modern Narrow "C" or perhaps the G&L Vintage Narrow "C"

Anyone have any relevant opinions on the subject please ?

Also, SB-1 the right choice for a passive or do you prefer the LB-100 for some functional reason ?

Cheers

Either narrow C profile should give you what you're looking for. The difference will be in the fretboard radius. The vintage (7.5") is more in keeping with the early G&L bass necks, but it should be purely a matter of preference. I'd just check the radius on your '75 RI and match that.

The MFD ("Magnetic Field Design") pickup on the SB-1 will give you more of a traditional G&L sound. Alnico pickups in G&L basses are a recent option. During the days when Leo Fender was around to design the instruments, they all used his MFD pickups (with the exception of a Schaller pickup made to Leo's specifications on the SB-1 from 1985 through early 1986).

I have a '92 SB-1, which was my introduction to G&L basses 22 years ago. I don't think you could go wrong with that model. It's a solid recording and gigging bass.

My '86 SB-1 came to me with a recent MFD pickup installed (the same as on the current SB-1), and I haven't gotten around to re-installing the original Schaller yet. I can tell you that the MFD thunders. I would be perfectly happy keeping it in my bass.
