Pickup Cover Removal

Post by SamIV »

I remember in a thread somewhere about ruining a pickup after removing a cover from it, but it might have been a P90. I would like to remove the covers from a set of pickups from a Tribute ASAT Deluxe Carve top. They are an AS4250C, & AW4370C. This is just for cosmetic reasons mounting in a different guitar. Looks like they are just soldered on, so would make for an easy removal. Any issues that anyone know of? I have done this successfully with other brands.

Will Ray has described ruining a Z-coil when attempting to remove the cover. These are plastic though. There is more information about removing covers in this thread if interested. I could not locate a thread with any of Will's comments regarding his damaged Z-coil though.

Just bought a set off ebay and want to replace the pickups in my Tribute Invader. Originals have no covers and trying to keep the same look, but might leave the covers on, we'll see. Thanks

I've ruined a big MFD in my ASAT Special trying to change the pickup covers. I used a hair dryer too. The outer windings were welded to the cover with wax. So be careful.

DON'T DO IT!

Many years ago I ruined 3 MFD's in a row trying to remove the covers. Never again.

See this post: Can you take the covers of the Ascari humbuckers easily?

Hope this helps.
