NGD Legacy Deluxe

Post by fabien »

Well not exactly NGD since I have it for about a month now but still...

Legacy Deluxe in clear red, mahogany body, maple/rosewood neck:

Great guitar, very punchy, excellent sustain. Both SC sound great with lot of clarity. Bucker is a Duncan JB which I don't like too much, too dark and a bit muddy though the PTB system is great for that, but I'll probably swap it soon for something else.
I have some tuning stability problems now but I'm working on it.
Build quality is excellent, the neck feels great, the finish is flawless and Ive never seen such a tight neck pocket.
And it's a looker!
It is also a quite different tone than the Suhr or the Strat, thanks to that great looking mahogany body.

I bought it from Martin Music in Memphis. Excellent business with them, I had bought the Suhr from them 6 years ago. Eric Martin is a very pleasant person and the guitar was within 5 days on my doorstep.

Cheers

Dank je Jos,

No it's equatorial mahogany, I believe it's called Okoume too.

Nice group Fabian. I like the Eq Mahogany's that I have because they are both light in weight. The clear red really look nice over the hog. -- Darwin

Hi Fabien,

You're right. African Mahogany is called Khaya and is considered to be mahogany proper. The whole term 'Equatorial Mahogany', aka Okoumé for the wood sourced from Africa, is highly confusing. Although with a lot of similar properties as mahogany, it is actually not part of the mahogany family. But does it really matter as long as the guitar sound great? ;)

Thanks everybody.

@Case24: yes that combination clear red/mahogany caught my eye so badly I had to buy it :luv: .

@darwinohm: light is a relative concept, yes that guitar is not too heavy to play standing but once in its case that's about 10cm longer than the case of my Suhr (both GGs) and I have to carry it some 200m to or from my parked car, it feels like my arm is 10cm longer...
But who cares, it does sound great.

How does the Legacy compare with the Suhr? Always thought those were great guitars.

I believe that you have one of the 35 Legacy HB Mahogany Special Build models that were built in 2006.
The body is Mahogany (not Orkoume) and the body finish is Caramel. This color was only used on the Mahogany Special Build instruments
built in 2004-2006. See this post in our G&L Knowledgebase: Production List of G&L Instruments (USA).
Also search the G&L Registry on the Legacy HB Mahogany Special Build and you will see some of the other ones which have been registered there.
I have updated the registry entry for your guitar to reflect this.

Craigh, Martin Music advertised it as equatorial Mahogany clear red and confirmed it when I specifically asked. However the build specs sheet only says mahogany, but confirms the clear red finish, and the date is october 2012:

Sam,

They are quite different animals. The Suhr is a strat with a slightly smaller and sharper body, a flatter and wider neck and a bucker in the bridge position. Even if it sounds a bit different from my CS Strat, it feels like a strat.
The Legacy, with its mahogany body and higher strings on the body feels and vibrate differently. Add to that a different neck profile and you've got a different guitar. I now understand advices I read here and there that goes: if you want a strat buy a strat, if you want something different try a Legacy.

That said, I bought this guitar because it was different from what I already have so I'm very happy with it.
You ought to try a Suhr once, they are fabulous guitars.

My mistake, I thought this was CLF10106 which was recently added to the G&L Registry.

Please do add this to our G&L Registry, please see this post in the Announcements Section for details on adding it to the Registry: Welcome! Read This First.
