First time poster. I came across a beautiful one piece birdseye maple neck 2005 legacy custom shop that appears to be in pretty good condition (a few minor scratches and one ding). WIth that said, the owner got it from a store that didn't have the paperwork, so not much is known about it.
Definitely appears to be custom shop, but other than the serial number, I don't have much information. What do you think an appropriate price would be for this? I see a variety on ebay and never know what it is actually appropriate.
I know I won't ever get a guitar with Birdeye neck again , pretty YES but unstable as heck .... my 2000 Comanche birdseye neck twisted after 14 years of playing great ..... did it in a about a 2 week period this winter .... I also like birds eye necks and have a 2003 S-500 with one. It has been stable but I believe they are more prone to being unstable or G&L wouldn't have such a short warranty on them. -- Darwin
I don't think it's a Custom Creations .... but all G&L's are kinda custom ... looks nice ... a steal would be below 700.00 , decent deal 750.00 to 850.00 , anything above that and your getting close to the price of a brand new guitar with 10 year warranty except Birdseye neck is 90 days
Despite what you'll read in lots of eBay ads and classifieds, G&L does not have a "custom shop". It has a Custom Creations department, which builds limited edition instruments and special runs. G&L's website doesn't list any Custom Creations runs of Legacies, aside from a special run with spalted maple bodies. As Fumble Fingers noted, just about every G&L is a custom order...and they will equal or exceed any "custom shop" instrument from the big manufacturers in build quality, finish and tone.
Regarding birds eye necks - I have two G&Ls with BEM necks from the late '90s. One is an ASAT Classic, and the other is a fretless L-2000 bass. Both necks are gorgeous, and have been stable so far. I tried heavy strings (12s, IIRC) on the ASAT Classic very briefly right after I got it. I could tell right away that the neck wasn't going to like that much tension, and since then (2010) it has been very happy with 10s. The L-2000 has had flat wounds that are fairly high tension as bass strings go, and hasn't had any problems that I can tell.
