Double Checking about Locking Tuners

Post by macg1 »

Greetings all, glad to be back on here after a long hiatus. Well, I just picked another 1994 G&L Legacy that is so mint, it looks like it came off the factory floor yesterday. This is my second Legacy from that same year and it is interesting to see the differences (mostly on the neck shape and headstock features like tuners thickness and scoop behind the nut).

Anyhow, this second guitar I am going to set up to have both up and down movement on the vibrato arm (my first Legacy is set up to only go down in pitch), so locking tuners are a must. The tuners on this "new" guitar are G&L stamped (which from my reading around here means that they are Schaller; funny that my first legacy from the same year has Sperzels). So according to some older forum advice I found in a search, I should stick with Schallers to ensure that no mods have to be made to the guitar. I also read here that Stewmac sells the right kind of Schaller locking tuners. Are these the correct ones? http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Tuners/Guit ... b=Pictures

Thanks for your assistance.

Yes, they are the correct ones. See: Re: Obtaining Locking Tuners.

BTW, welcome back! :greet:

Yeah Craig, that is the thread i referred to on my original post. I was just double checking to make sure nothing new came up, and that I read all the information correctly. Thanks for the quick reply!

Craig, do you happen to know if these tuners will also fit an Asat Classic Tribute model from Indonesia?

Like Darwin said, they will not fit and would require some modification of the existing holes.

Also, see this post asking about tuners for Tribute series: replacement tunners.

my 1997 S 500 has the Sperzel's too ...... I have two brand new 2013's with standard tuners along with the DF and have no tuning issues at all , only difference I see between locking and standard tuners are it's easier to change strings on locking

...and my 1998 S-500 has Schaller locking tuners. Maybe when you requested "locking", they used what was in stock at the moment.

Hello everyone! I am new here and just purchased a 1993 US-made G&L Legacy strat. I am interested in locking tuners, but the G&L locking tuners on their site are sold out, and the product links above are no longer valid. My guitar currently has G&L branded tuners. Any recommendations? And should I be looking for single pin or dual pins? I prefer not to drill any new holes. Thank you!

The current tuners on your guitar (if stock) are Schaller tuners. You should be able to find Schaller locking tuners which will drop right in. The current G&L Locking tuners are
also drop in, so you might contact the G&L On-Line Store to see when they will be available again. Email address is webstore@bbesound.com.

Hope this helps.

Thank you! The product catalog for 1993 and 1993 listed on this site says Sperzel. Is that inaccurate?

The 1992-93 catalog says Schallers for the Legacy but the 1993-94 catalog says Sprezels for the Legacy. IIRCC, you could get either during that time period.
See this post in our G&L Knowledgebase forum: What tuners are used on G&L guitars (USA models)? and you will be able to see the differences of each manufacter's tuners.

If your tuners are Sperzels, then the locking tuners which G&L currently offers (when restocked) will not be drop in replacements.
