Quartersawn neck questions

does quartersawn necks look any different than a regular neck ??.... is there a way to identify quartersawn from other types of wood ??

A quarter sawn neck will have a much straighter grain. Less swirling going the length of the neck. Look at the back of the headstock and you will see the lines. They may be at an angle but a straight ling off the angle.

It's the orientation of the growth rings within the lumber. Imagine a board that's 1" thick by 3" wide. If it's quartersawn, the annual rings will be oriented from the front to the back of the board, so when you look at the 3" face you'd see the grain as relatively straight lines running the length of the board. The opposite of quatersawn is flatsawn, which would have the annual rings oriented from side to side. The 3" face would have few if any straight grain lines running along its length. Most visible grain would be wavy, curved or arched. In between the two would be riftsawn.

Thanks !! .... getting ready for a Factory neck replacement on my 2000 Comanche , no birdseye this time , going to order quartersawn for the replacement and was curious what it looked like while I'm still trying to figure out what options to order

Ya skip the birdseye. That is a good call. It looks great but, can have issues. THe QS is a worthwhile upgrade.

The best use for birdseye maple is firewood. That stuff is trash, and I'll never own another guitar with it.

I once had a kitchen made from Birdseye maple. The cabinet guy said he would do it, but no warranty, guarantee...he knew that its very unstable.

The kitchen was stunning..........for a year or so, then the laminate started cracking, peeling, finish came off.........did a repair and sold the house,

Nasty stuff, but stunning to look at!

I know I won't own another birdseye used or new ..... any new G&L's for me from here on out will be quartersawn
