New Special Launch ASAT Pine in Lefty

Post by vintagecream »

Arrived Fedex yesterday, weight is 6.8 lbs. Questions, what does the 3 way pickup selector switch do? I haven't had time to play it much and have been using the Legacy for the last year. Also, I think this is only one of two made in lefty! If the admin can tell me and verify that fact I would appreciate it!

Gonna gig it this Saturday and mostly play classic rock, noticed the pickup is microphonic under high gain. Is this normal?

Unfortunately, yes. Its a constant problem that G&L seem loathe to address.

Is the solution less gain or pickup swap? I don't play country or clean.

I disagree with Jamie's comment that it is a constant problem. Just search on the G&LDP and you will see very few posts regarding microphonics on ASAT Classic models.
And it's very rare that you find them in a new guitar. See this post: How do I fix MFD bridge pickup squealing problem?, for details and solutions.

If you purchased this guitar from a G&L dealer as a new guitar, take it to the dealer (or contact them) and have them handle it under G&L's Warranty (see G&L's Support page for details).

I also checked with Paul Gagon, who designs the pickups and also oversees the Fullerton factory, and asked if these pickups are wax potted like all other G&L pickups and if these
pickups were prone to microphonics at high gain. Here's his reply:
The Alnico ASAT pickups are potted the same way as all our pickups. They shouldn’t be any more prone to microphonics.
Regarding the number of lefty ASAT Classic Anico Launch Editions, not all 100 instruments have been ordered and built yet. I will try and get the final numbers (lefty vs righty)
once I hear the full production run has been completed.

Hope this helps.

You are welcome!

I almost forgot your other question regarding the 3-way pickup selector switch, Here's a chart we have in our Gallery:

Looking forward to seeing a photo of your guitar, too. :searching: ;)
Hope this helps.

Vintagecream comes from the pickguard on my 2013 Legacy.

I'm taking the ASAT in for a Dimarzio Fastrack today, it will solve my problems, I need a beefier tone for classic rock with no noise since I play with high gain, fuzz/compressors/distortions/overdrives/Marshalls.

It is the best playing guitar I've ever owned, this includes Historic and Custom Shop Gibby's and other G&L's. They'll have to pry this one from my dead hands! Pics to follow.

Wound up (no pun intended) getting a JOE BARDEN "MODERN" bridge double rail, sounds good and no squeal.

So, it was the bridge pickup which had gone microphonic, is this correct?

Did you buy this guitar new from a G&L dealer? If so, will you be contacting them to let them know about the pickup problem?
I do suggest you do so, so that they can let the factory know about this and send back the defective pickup for them to investigate
as to why it went microphonic and also send you are replacement pickup under warranty.

Just my $0.02.

Even if you don't plan to use that original pickup yourself it is worth having this investigated and replaced (and if eligible under warranty) by G&L so you would be able to include the original if you did change your mind and sell the guitar. I wonder whether declarations of never are not actually the kiss of death. Often enough I witness people eventually going against such statements.

I'm keeping this guitar for the rarity factor and the light weight, sold my Pauls due to backaches. It plays fabulously and I just emailed the seller. Thanks guys.

Keeping the original p.u.'s, think it was a bridge squeal but don't care cause the Barden's rock!
