NBD - '92 ASAT Sig
This is a sweet one: a '92 ASAT Signature Bass with some interesting production dates. First, for some proof that this bass does, in fact, exist:
I'll need to wait for a warmer day to get good outdoor photos, so in the mean time here are a few taken by the previous owner:
I purchased it from the original owner, who bought it new from a dealer in Southern California in late '92. The body is dated Mar 19 1991, which puts it at the absolute tail end of the Leo-era:
I've never seen pencil marks like those in a G&L neck pocket before. If anybody has ideas about the "3 3/8" and other scribbling, I'd love to hear them.
The circuit board is Rev 1.0, which places it in the BBE era:
Now for the interesting part...the neck is dated over six months after the Signature Series was stopped:
It's also 19 months after the body was completed. I'm not 100% up on my BBE history, but it seems like this would have been shipped out under the looming threat of lawsuit from FMIC. From what the seller told me, I'm sure this isn't an employee instrument (Greg and Larry - if either of you are reading this, I'd love to hear your opinions!).
I'm calling the body swamp ash in the Registry. It is the most perfectly flatsawn G&L I've ever seen, with the barest hints of grain when you look closely. I couldn't capture them well under indoor lights, but here are my attempts:
I thought from the lack of visible grain in the seller's photos that this would turn out to be a maple body, but the pores in the neck pocket are definitely consistent with ash. The neck is rift sawn, and has a gloss finish instead of BBE's standard satin.
As far as sound goes, all I can say is "wow". I haven't had time to dig into all of the switching combinations, but on a quick check-out with the B-15 they all sound very full.
That's all for now. Time to make the walls shake some more!

That's what I'm curious about. This bass wasn't finished until six months after G&L announced there would be no more Signature instruments...

I checked with Dave on this bass and this should explain it:KenC wrote:That's what I'm curious about. This bass wasn't finished until six months after G&L announced there would be no more Signature instruments...

Hope this helps.Hi Craig,
Got it. ASAT Bass Cherryburst / RW completed 4/5/91. Next to it is penciled in “Repaired 11-10-92”.
Thanks, Craig.

If you measure from the heel end of the neck to the top two neck screw holes, it's 3 3/8" exactly.KenC wrote:

Maybe to align a jig for drilling ?
... my best guess

Thanks for the comments guys!
Ken
That's close, but I don't know if it's exactly correct. Eyeballing with a ruler beside the neck pocket makes it look more like 3 5/8" to the screw holes. I will take a better measurement when I do the next string change.Elwood wrote:If you measure from the heel end of the neck to the top two neck screw holes, it's 3 3/8" exactly.

Ken, what a find! Is it chambered by any chance? It looks like new.--Darwin

Semi-Hollow ASAT Bass production started in 2001, so no it would not be chambered.darwinohm wrote:Ken, what a find! Is it chambered by any chance? It looks like new.--Darwin

It is a light one, at 8 1/4 pounds. I haven't tried playing standing up yet. I need to dig out a strap and see if all the internet griping about neck dive is true.

That's what the microwave plates are for...you move it to the control cavity to counter neck dive.KenC wrote:It is a light one, at 8 1/4 pounds. I haven't tried playing standing up yet. I need to dig out a strap and see if all the internet griping about neck dive is true.

Maybe you can find an aftermarket one since they didn't come with 'em back in Mar. of '91
I think Jerry Garcia had an old metal slide in one of his guitars to make it balance.
Did you see there is one of those aftermarket strap pin extending 3 bolt plates on ebay (ending soon)?
I've never used one, but as far as beauty in design ; those have some nice lines. I wonder how stiff they ar and if some energetic stage play would bend it close to the pin.
8 .25 lbs,wow : ) yeehaw

someone asked why there are two strap buttons?
Dave's reply was:
You might consider adding another strap button (and relocate the existing one), if neck dive were to be a problem.you use the one on the low E side. This design is neck heavy, but using an offset strap button helps a lot.
The other strap button is for balance - visually, it would look stupid without it, and functionally, it makes it easy to lean against a wall, amp etc.
Just a thought.

Ken, my Asat Savannah bass is just a tad heavier but it does have a bit of neck dive. As Dave suggests, the strap button on the low string side helps but I use a 4 inch wide strap which pretty much takes care of it. I don't find it an issue at all. -- Darwin

Re: NBD - '92 ASAT Sig
Thanks for the tip Craig, but there will be no mods happening to this baby! I've been able to find more than my fair share of gorgeous G&L basses, but this is the most beautiful of them all.Craig wrote:You might consider adding another strap button (and relocate the existing one), if neck dive were to be a problem.

I played standing up yesterday evening. The only strap I had close at hand was an Ernie Ball 2" nylon. With that, there was a tiny bit of neck dive when I didn't have my left hand on the neck. It wasn't enough to change my opinion of the bass. I will try it again with a wider strap. With weighing in at just over eight pounds, this is one of the only basses I've ever found to be comfortable with a 2" strap.darwinohm wrote:I use a 4 inch wide strap which pretty much takes care of it. I bought this bass from Matt (the seller on eBay, and an all-around great guy to do business with!). That same extender had been in this bass's case for years, but he never felt the need to use it. I can see why. BTW, the extenders were originally sold in the TalkBass classifieds. I forget which member over there came up with the idea and made them. They are supposed to work very well. They aren't being made anymore, but the inventor has been willing to share the specs with anybody who wants to have one made for his own use.Elwood wrote:Here's that strap pin extender ...
