Well, we made it to Thursday - Gidday!

I have an early & full day so posting this now...

Thanks to all who responded yesterday. Wasnt able to respond to everyone's posts but I read them all. Some interesting commentary re the current state of popular music... No predictions tho on what the next big thing will be - time will tell...

As I was reading the responses yesterday, one thing came to mind - in the 90's what was considered 'Alternative' became mainstream and thus the scope of that genre expanded so much that it nearly disappeared...and at the same time styles continued to merge and meld so it became more difficult to suss or catagorise what was what. Labels are just that and as such are rather subjective... Yeah, some would still argue that there were some new movements since then like Emo for example, but overall nothing ground-shaking or vastly innovative as far as a new musical style...

(Since I'm posting this early, I will refrain from revealing the answer to yesterday's trivia question... Answer will be revealed on Fri)

Speaking of innovative - this band IMO has been & continues to be the most innovative band to have come out in a long long time.... ironically - they formed in the late '80s.

I'm sure there are better clips on Youtube to state my claim but this live performance is one of my favs and speaks for itself.

Here are some pics of my Char'd ASAT Sig neck on a refin '88 SC-3 body. I wasnt fond of the rather thin slightly V-shaped neck so I sold it off last year to a fellow GbL'r... the ASAT neck is a good match to the body sonically and aesthetically...









Again - wanting to thin the herd so I'm considering selling the body assy - if any of you are interested, let me know...

Question - For those who own G&L's from this time period - do you find the neck profiles to be on the thin side and rather V-shaped?
I've owned a couple ASATs from this era and found that to be the case... nice feeling necks but not my thang. It seems the necks got fuller and rounder towards the end of the decade...

Kit's response the other day reminded me of the early days of college radio in Seattle.
KEXP was then KCMU - the University of Washington's college radio station long before Microsoft Billionaire, Paul Allen, acquired it.
Back in the day, they broadcasted in mono on 10 measely watts. You had to have a good stereo/receiver to even pick up the station... circa '81 they expanded to stereo broadcast and 50,000 watts - the first song they played? Yep - Moving in Stereo by The Cars...

The great thing bout the station was they played a varied assortment of cool music much like today but it was so small that any time of the day or night you could call them up, request a song and shortly thereafter they'd play it ! Unlike commercial radio at the time where you were lucky to even get through.
A friend and I were avid fans of the station and had it on all the time.
Some of our favs back then were Split Enz, Elvis Costello and this band... I didnt know their name at the time but that didnt stop me from requesting this song all the bloody time...

Ok - Non Musical Topic for Today - Animals.

Jackie & I are both certified reflexologists and cat lovers. We met last summer while she was in Seattle teaching an animal reflexology workshop.
She is also a Reiki Master and author of the book, Reflexology for Cats. Very well written and an excellent guide on natural therapies for animals.
In addition to reflexology, it covers many holistic modalities for animals such as Bach Flower Remedies, Craniosacral, and Holistic Pulsing. Well worth picking up.

jackie lives with a small burmese kitty named Matisse who is adorable and very sweet not too mention a bit of a celebrity... having graced many a page of Jackie's book along with her late brother, Morandi. She's also appeared in numerous magazine and newspaper articles. I fell in Love with her immediately and am missing her graceful presence.
My beloved Kitty, Rishka, passed on when I was living in San Diego. We had 9+ years together that I'm grateful for but I miss her every day.

I'm sure many of you have or have had animal companions that are dear to your heart. Besides offering us their companionship and unconditional love, their behaviour can also be the source of much humour.

So today I ask you to share a funny animal story - the only stipulation being it has to be something you witnessed yourself firsthand - no youtube vids or internet pics... key word here - story - Dig?

Here's one that makes me laugh whenever I think of it -

A couple of years ago in SD, while getting gas one morning on my way to work. I spotted a Jack Russel Terrier in the car parked next to me. Now if ya'll arent familiar with that breed think of Nipper - His Master's voice or Asta from the 40's Thin Man series. Asta's proy a better example as Nipper is sitting still - anyone who's seen a jack Russel knows they dont do that... and they have one speed - FULL ON.

So, while I'm at the pump I look over and see the dog inside this woman's car manically jumping up an down on the driver's seat and door while barking and yapping at his caretaker who is pumping gas. The woman smiles and talks to him while she does so... just then he comes down and lands right on top of the door lock - locking the door - the woman smile fades... she left her keys in the ignition and all the other doors are locked...Oops. I tried to keep from laughing but couldnt do so... fortunately, she saw the humour in it and laughed too.

So - bring em on! Best submission possibly wins a copy of Pink Floyd's Animals... I say possibly as I have to make sure I still have that CD... Regardless, a prize will given.

Urban myth has it that my life was spared and another's cut short by a fateful fiip of a coin. Truth is someone having the flu saved me that sad and fateful night. I think the mystery musician is Wayon Jennings. Missed the plane trip that Killed buddy Holly and later sang the theme for the Dukes of Hazzard.

G & L neck profiles...I never played one other than my '06 Legacy and it is pretty beefy. For comparison is is almost the same profile as
my Eric Johnson strat which is modeled after a fairly fat '57 strat profile

Animal stories: We were looking for a pet after our standard poodle died. Did not want another dog right away to avoid comparisons.
Our son likes cats so we did some reading and decided we wanted to find a Manx. There was a local establishment called "The Cat House",
...no really.
I called and it just so happened that someone had abanonded a Manx that she had taken in. She was a few hours from taking her to the pound since she did not get along with her other cats. So....my wife and son bring her home. We took her to the vet to have her checked out...turns out our female is a neutered male, and meaner than sin. If you happened to turn you hand the wrong way he would bite...and he had a memory. If you offended him, he would wait, maybe
a whole day, but then he would make you pay. Anyway, all we can figure is that former owners were abusive to him and he eventually calmed down and became a very cool cat. His name is Tuffy and he is. If you've been around Manx cats at all they are the closest thing to a pit bull in cat fur.
Fortunate for him because ournew standard poodle loves to play rough and Tuffy can give as good as he gets.
The point of the story really, is an animal rescue as he was headed for the pound.....and the lady we got him from....she was arrested a few weeks later
for hoarding cats....she had something like 200 in that house and many were in bad shape.
We are glad to have saved one.

I like the necks on my older G&L's. Of the newer ones that I've played, they've been rather varied, but of them, I like the smaller necks better. It seems that after one has played the guitar for a number of years, they start to like bigger necks. Maybe in a few years I'll change my thinking on this.

I'm ecstatic and borderline suicidal after watching that "Paranoid Android" clip. Holy Moly! I'm supposed to do some recording tomorrow --- now I feel like quitting.

It's been a busy week so I haven't had the opportunity to respond, but I do try to read up the daily LR before the day is over.

Radiohead is definitely innovative. I like them myself, but some people would consider them indulgent. There may not be a lot of innovative music around, but I can still find enough interesting to enjoy. A couple of bands that I find generally making interesting music are Gorillaz and Hockey. Hockey is supposedly from Portland, but I found out they've been drifting around the country, it's just that when they were 'discovered' from a self-recorded EP they were in Portland. It also appears that they are more popular in Europe than here in the US.

I picked up an 1990 SC3 late last year and there is definitely something kind of magical about this guitar.



One thing that has stumped me so far is that I have taken this guitar to band practice several times, most times it is very quiet, but a couple of times it got noisy in positions 1, 3 & 5. I still have not been able to figure out what the difference between those times are. It may get noisy sometimes, but the guitar sounds good every time.

Waylon Jennings and the TV show was Dukes of Hazard! Interestingly I just saw the end of La Bamba recently and wished I had caught it earlier. I had always heard that story about the plane crash but was never familiar with Richie Valens' music.

Back when I was a teenager, the big thing was replacing the screen doors with the solid glass doors - you know the ones you can see through but let no air in! Not the same in my opinion, but kind of welcome because they were not as easy to destroy with a newspaper hurled from the middle of the street by the reckless paperboy like me! Anyway... we had a cat named Princess - who was famous in the neighborhood for being mean as a snake. She would literally stalk and attack my friends without warning. I blame my stepdad who was a great guy but really did not like cats much - he tormented her for fun. Plus, she was Siamese - not the friendliest of cat breeds to begin with in my experience.

Well, on to the funny part. Princess would often tear through our small house from one end to the other at full speed - one bank turn being the side of my parent's bed and the other being the back of the couch in the living room. It was actually pretty funny to see her tearing through the house in circles, hearing her claws digging in along the way, and seeing her ears matted flat in concentration as she ran. But it gets better. One sunny day we had the front door open, except for the solid glass storm door that had been recently installed, and were watching tv in the living room. On her full-speed circular run through the house, she must have see the sunlight out of the corner of her eye, ad suddenly veared off course. She slammed full-speed into the glass door and collapsed on the floor. She immediately stood back up, clearly dazed, and took a few slow steps toward the middle of the room before stopping to give herself a bath. After several seconds she looked over at us, dying laughing at this point, as if to say "what?"

That's all I got!

Yeah, I've played a few mid 90's that had nice neck profiles but I prefer the older ones too.

Nice SC-3 body and charred ASAT neck.

The only problem with buying a G&L guitar body is finding a neck for it.

Another trivia question for you is:

What instrument did Waylon play for Buddy Holly on that tour?
Answer: Fender Bass. Waylon left the Precision bass that he was using for that tour in a locker in New york City.
I wish I was the lucky person who found it!

Animal Story:
I recently had to put down my Bichon Frise (small white dog breed) of 15 years. His name was Snowball and I have many stories of his antics.

He was the dog that I got when I worked at the County Animal Shelter , in 1993, installing a LAN and software to computerize their database for licensed animals and trouble calls to their dispatcher.
He was 3 months old when I adopted him.
My son was 8 and my twin girls were 5 when I brought Snowball home from the shelter.
He grew up with my kids and Snowball loved bagels.
He not only loved bagels, he went crazy over them whenever anyone would fix one. Bichons do a begging routine whenever they want something where they stand up on their hind legs and pump their front paws up and down. Its quite expressive and funny and Snowball was a master of this technique to get something. This is a breed that survived by way of cuteness, not competence.

A story of Snowball's resilience is that he got into chocolate serveral times. Chocolate is very bad for dogs if you didn't know, and on one occasion , Snowball found a box of chocolates that my wife had hid under the sofa while were were out for the day.
The dog ate half of the box and was still going at it when we came home to find out what he had done. Ther was nothing we could do, if it was going to be fatal, but Snow pulled through it, none the worse for eating a half pound of Russell Stover Chocolates!

He was a great dog. He eventually went blind due to cataracts and I could tell last Spring that it was his time to go since he was no longer having any fun being a dog.

We all still miss him.
