Dear Community
Some strange questions for ASAT user's
After 30+ years(with breaks) of Stratocaster only I have finally graduated to -->TELE
Was always too hard to play for me(need to be so accurate as otherwise tone differs a lot)-->now I can (relatively) master it
I have a Xavier(XV-835)and a Benford HH
and now I want to get more serious.
One of my best guitars is A mahagonay G&L Comanche
and therefore I want an ASAT.
I am from Europe so hard to try them out
To be specific I am looking either in a G&L Deluxe either the one with the
Two humbuckers
(Neck - Seymour Duncan '59 SH-1, Bridge - Seymour Duncan TB-4)-->coil split.or the one with
G&L Magnetic Field Design high output single coil pickups
Did anybody play both?
How is the TONE difference when the HB a split coil vs the SC version ?
Will the SC one ,although high output have a classical tele sound once volume is run off?
What is the biggest noticeable TONE difference between an Tribute and an USA made?
I will travel to SOCAL in July, where is the biggest G&L USED dealer, where to look?
Thanks for some serious answers

Re: G&L ASAT Deluxe(HB) vs ASAT Deluxe (SC)
roland,
I went through your same scenario about two years ago....I did a lot of research and played a lot of G&Ls in the chicagoland area. I used to own a 78' Les Paul Standard and currently have an 89' Fender Strat. I wanted that humbucker sound back and started researching the G&L line because I knew they were great guitars...
I wanted the most versitle guitar that had a broad range of tones...Nothing against Leo's MFDs, Zcoils, and other pick ups, but I wanted the Seymour Duncans HBs after playing through them in a store on an ASAT Deluxe. I just let my ears do the talking...
Plus you can get the SC sound through the ASAT Deluxe as Well! Unreal guitar, unreal price....been playing for 20+ years and it's the nicest action and tone I've ever heard and I don't even have a great amp! Just a 5w Fender Champion 600. If I can save up for a nice tube amp, look out!
Very pleased with the ASAT Deluxe....I'm surprised you don't see more of them.....hope this helped!
If you have any specific questions, let me know...I'll try and post a photo...

Fitz
Did the same on remote control
It is virtually impossible over here in Europe(and I life in Austria where music has a society value) to go and play several of them.
So as I had a play with a Duncan equipped Strat and asked my frinds in California to look after some and ply some-->they have same comment.
So I pulled the trigger via Web on a 1998 ASAT deluxe Semi hollow.I will travel to Southcal in July(business and pick it up
I hope that its that Gibson tone(Need it for Still got the blues) but in a for me playable guitar(could never handle those Gibsons + 30 years of playing with bigger breaks)
Thanks for the response anyway

Looks Sweet, you will not be disappointed! Funny you played a Strat with Seymour Duncans....After I played my ASAT I was so impressed that I put HB Seymour Duncan's in my 89' Strat! Lil' 59 in neck, Screamin Demon in middle, and JB Jr. in bridge......no hum, good tone, awesome crunch.
Good luck Roland....
HAve fun!!!

I feel the same way about the Deluxe - an exceptional guitar that inexplicably is not often talked about - my Les Paul Standard had to find another home because of mine! Here it is:

That's hilarious! I try to explain to my wife that each guitar I own (4) has a distinctive sound for specific songs and purposes....just like how each pair of her shoes seems to go ONLY with one outfit! (Funny how women need a new dress for every wedding you go to....I've had two suits in my entire life...and I'd still be wearing the first one if the cleaning lady didn't throw it in the washing machine years ago!)
I also point out that the meticulous care of my guitars will only increase their value and can be inherited by my children...while her smelly shoes will eventually end up in a landfill somewhere. HA!

I don't find it does the "classic" tele sound very well at all,it is it's own animal.
I think a lot of the real tele sound comes from the string-through design and the metal bridgeplate.
The Asat Classic is a string through and has regular SC sized pups, but they are MFD as well,so still not quite the same as an actual tele.
USA G&L and Tribute model use the same pups.

I have played both guitars, but don't own both. I am currently playing an ASAT deluxe w/sd daily. I don't think of the Deluxe as a tele, other than the shape, it is my LP style guitar. Which it does really well. Not much of a fan of the pickups split. They sound thin and bright, but wussy. The bridge pickup sound is to die for.
The soap bar MFD's are their own thing. Amazingly flexible. They don't sound at all like a humbucker, but they sound great over an amazingly diverse tone range in their own way. Crystal clear, money; and drive a preamp like crazy for very nice distortion. Some knob turning and you can get some pretty fat tones compared to a tradition single coil, imo.
Good luck getting the ladies on board...

Re: G&L ASAT Deluxe(HB) vs ASAT Deluxe (SC)
Hi,
Having both guitars, I have a few comments.
First, the ASAT Deluxe does not sound like a Les Paul. In HB, mode is there is a vague similarity, but the ASAT is its own critter, has its own sound. And I find the SC mode to be nice, but not quite as sharp & cutting as a true SC.
As for the SC one you mention, from reading your post I assume that you mean the ASAT Classic, not the ASAT Special. It is fairly "Tele-ish." To my ears, the Classic sounds more like a Tele, and the ASAT Special sounds less like a Les Paul.
On the other hand, you can't wrong either way.

Re: G&L ASAT Deluxe(HB) vs ASAT Deluxe (SC)
I was thinking that he was talking about the deluxe and special deluxe.
I really think that if you are wanting a tele sound, you will be disappointed with the deluxe. If you want a HH guitar, the deluxe may be just the ticket as it is for me. I have owned Specials in the past, but do not currently, but I think the special is one of the most versatile electrics around.
I also have a classic, and I don't know about anyone else's; but mine is an excellent varietal representation, exactly what a t-style guitar should sound like. Especially when i lend it to someone who plays decent!
