Three Bolt Legacy Hardtail Left Handed

Post by willross »

It's been a while... Here is my other favorite G&L:

I like how the body has much deeper cuts and it's incredibly light weight. 5 to 6 pounds? I need to get a scale, but it is as light as my Parker. What year? The serial # is G043524 and think it's on the earlier side.

I appreciate a light weight guitar. My ASAT Special is surprisingly light with its standard cut compared to my Classic. I like the belly and arm contours available in the ASAT. They are within the same aesthetic range as a typical S-style body. Personally, I would rather have the weight than cut more wood off the body in any areas than the normal cuts of the Legacy/S500 or belly/arm contoured ASAT's. From the front this one looks normal and quite beautiful. I love the natural with a cream or black pickguard, myself. On the other hand, if I was on stage for hours often enough I might prefer many things that relieved a source of pain.

Yeah, the shaping was done like that then. Even my late 90's one has less. I like the pickups, want to know which type the are, but don't want to open it up. No branding on the covers...

Thanks. It's the first lefty Legacy w/ saddle-lock and all original parts I've come across, except the case. It's a new G&G w/ the G&L plaque in front. Fits perfectly too.

Nice aged woods and a bit of oxidization, that's it.

A question for the experts: what year(s) did the company make the pearl guards 4 ply and oversized around the saddle-lock?

IIRC, the pole pieces were different on the Seymour Duncans used on early Legacies, compared to the G&L pickups that followed. I believe there is a description of both in the Knowledgebase. Check the "List of Pickups Used on G&L Guitars" thread.

I think they are the SD's and the E pole in the first pickup doesn't quite line up. I've just seen the few hard tails where the pick guard wraps tightly around the bridge and this one is oversized like for an ashtray bridge...

interesting PG…..wonder why its cut like that.

Also, speculating that there is an alignment problem with saddle lock bridges on lefty guitars. The saddle lock bridge is a righty, they don't make a lefty version, so the screws line up differently on a lefty.

I know with my asat special, it didn't align and the strings were not over the poles. My luthier fixed it no issue.

Just wondering if its normal for a lefty to come out that way? Who knows???

Love the bridge, just needed to tweak it to have it align properly.

For this reason and the fact that I already have a hard tail, I have ordered the LE-2 with the upgraded Tremelo…Don't have a tremelo guitar right now, so that will cover it.

Or it just may need this: String alignment issues and a simple cure.

Do you know the specifics of what your luthier did to adjust the bridge?

I have a 2011 ASAT Special with a saddle lock bridge & it exhibits the alignment issues that astutzmann points out. Fixing this is NOT the "String alignment issues & simple cure." problem. I have tried to pull the neck into alignment several times - It ain't moving where it needs to be. The strings are NOT centered on the upper fretboard or over the pickup pole pieces. I suspect the Saddle lock bridge is the problem (on a Lefty) guitar. To alleviate this problem on my ASAT Special, I wedged a piece of plastic between the High E saddle & the bridge before securing the "locking" screw. That doesn't really resolve the problem, but it helps. I love the Saddle Lock bridge but will not buy another (lefty) G&L guitar with a saddle lock. In fact, this problem is one of the reasons I cancelled my order for an LE-2.

Very nice Will. Natural is one of my favorites and that is a nice piece of wood. As for saddle lock bridges, I have shimmed my basses to correct string alignment issues. I use a brass shim on the outside of the saddle , either left or right depending on which way the strings need togo. I posted a picture here of my Savanna Asat Bass showing the fix although it is hard to see. Great score Will. Dealer or private party?-- Darwin

In My case as well, the issue had to be fixed by re-routing the neck pocket. The simple fix of trying to reseat or reset the neck did not work for me as well.

I have seen a couple left and right handed hardtail Legacy's from the early 1990's that had the pickguard like that. Just wanted to see if any owners were on here too... The alignment is perfect and great low action. I read somewhere online regarding the SD's on the first Legacy's having the bottom E stick out a bit, but all others are dead center. I'll hunt the article down, but it sounds great including bridge position. I was just seeking a possible confirmation. You never know in the WWW space...

I got it from Southpaw and they did the whole 52 point set-up deal too. They have an ASAT 3 w/ DFV, but can't get past the green-ness.

Still looking for that article. I thought it was GGJaguar, but no... Pretty sure I wasn't drunk surfing. Not 100%, though.

Their Cinnamon ASAT Classic is actually an ASAT Classic Alnico Launch in Autumn Burst with an "MFD single coil in bridge position, Seymour Duncan Seth Lover humbucker in neck position."

The ASAT Classic 3 shares the same "MFD single coil in bridge position, Seymour Duncan Seth Lover humbucker in neck position" but they don't provide a description of the middle pickup.

Yeah, their descriptions are a bit off... copied and pasted-ish. Great guitar, but will have Brown Guitars http://www.brownsguitarfactory.com do a check-up and be sure.

Here's a pic I took today:

Ok, the last one is a Nash I got from Jim Duncan at Southpaw Guitars. He said it was custom built for him, but didn't like the color. I think the work "ugly" was thrown around...

Hey, thanks! You can see the slight body shape change from the early 1990's Legacy and the late 90's S-500. Top horn rounded, etc... I love the old 4ply tort guard too!!!

Thanks, and it's very light too. No so as to have the "old" neck drop, but balanced.
