Sat Night Rambling, Comparison Of Pickups- Basses

Post by darwinohm »

I have been preparing for recording tomorrow. I have been stringing cables, hooking up direst boxes and preamps. I have also set up the sessions so I am ready to go when every one else arrives tomorrow. I have three bass guitars and was doing a test track on each of them using ProTools, comparing the tone of the three guitars. I discovered that ProTools is excellent for adjusting the pickup balance. The gain bar in ProTools showed that the pickup on the Pink Lady needed to be balanced, which I did in ProTools. I really couldn't hear it but it was apparent on the record meter. But I discovered something else that I think is worthwhile of mention.

The three basses are a Musicman Stingray 5 (Pink Lady), A 5 string Carvin Koa with a Piezo and dual humbuckers, and the G&L Asat Savannah 4 string. This is getting technical and probably won't mean much to you but this is data that I am looking at regarding the pickup response by looking at the recording waveform. They all sound very good for recording but different. They are adjusted for the same volume with similar Eq. What surprised me was the dynamics of the pickups. The G&L Asat has the most dynamic waveform and the amplitude of the waveform is the most dynamic (higher peaks and lower valleys). with the Stingray next and the Carvin with the smoothest waveform (lowest dynamic). The pickups are all adjusted to about the same height, very similar action and all using the same brand and size strings. The G&L really sounds good and there is no doubt that they have a very dynamic pickup. I will use each of them on particular songs and this will be fun. This is probably the most useless information you have had in a long while but the data is in and as Ed says," what the heck". Objective results for a Saturday night and I think I will wind down and have a cold one! Sam and Magic are ready!!!! File this in the information in the you will never need file. Have a great Saturday evening!!-- Darwin

just the opposite...great stuff
especially with the same strings pickup height etc.
Last night I was reading about cardioid configurations for PA subs,
that entails analyzing graphs and tweeking accordingly...love the nerdy audio subjects...keep 'em coming.

Especially when team G&L comes out on top !

Thanks for posting this info Darwin! I'm not surprised by your results. What I'd be really curious to see is the same test repeated with either an L-1505 against the Pink Lady, or a Musicman pickup in the ASAT's sweet spots.

An update on this post. Today I am recovering from our 22 hours of recording in the last couple of days. That doesn't include the smart talk time after we finished both nights. Anyway I am terribly fond of the Pink Lady and I used her on the first 8 songs we did. Next up was Hello Mary Lou and I thought this would be a good song for the Asat Bass. I am tuning it up and it was coming through the Studio Monitors (direct recording) and Terry, the drummer, looked at me and said "Wow", listen to that one. We did Hello Mary Lou and Steve the lead player said the tone in the Asat Bass is unbelievable. It has that articulate live, kind of springy sound that is hard to describe but Grunt has been used before. I would describe it as extremely articulate and just plain clear. So the whole band gets in a discussion about this Asat bass and how the tone is unbelievable. I was also a bit surprised during the recording as I had never heard anything quite like it and you hear the tone of the pickups when you direct record. Now here is the kicker, they fired the Pink Lady on the spot. They talked me into using the Asat on the remaining tracks that we did and want me to redo some of the tracks we had already done. I liked the nice tone of the Pink Lady but my bandmates like bump and grind tone. Recording direct really brings out the personality of a bass guitar. So what is G&L going to do about the fact that I need a 5 string Asat???? Hello Mary Lou really cooks and that Savannah Asat really is a cooker. I feel Bad for the Pink Lady as she is really a looker. Anyway maybe I will kick back tonight with a cold one and try to get over it. Any ideas appreciated!!-- Darwin

Supereiv, I have not recorded with the L2500 but I would expect the tone to be very similar as everything is the same except for the body design.

Salmon,It will be available to the forum when it is completed. I will post it in the gallery in MP3. The band does rule! I need a 5 string Asat!!!!!

Just to be clear, I use a direct box directly into the Digi 002 so the only tone shaping is with the bass controls. When using headphone to listen you really hear the tone.

Thanks-- Darwin
