Post by Fumble fingers »

my 1996 S 500 seems to pick up noise ..... I can touch the control knobs , pick guard , pu's and you here it real loud through the amp when I have some OD cranking ..... also I here a hum when I'm not touching the strings and when you change the selector switch you here every click through the amp .... I assume a ground or something came loose ...... what do I need to do for diagnois or start with ??

if the noise is here, that's not a problem, but if you hear it, that's different  .

and multimeter will help, measure the continuity between the bridge and the output ground.

To check the bridge ground I don't think you don't need to remove anything.

1. set DMM to measure resistance
2. Plug a cable into your s-500 output
3. touch one end of your MM to the bridge and the other to the ground of the cable (not the tip but the side)
4. Note the resistance reported (should be zero, afaik)

I would say almost zero, depends on the quality of the device and cables and also on the measuring range you choose. The lowest range should be choosen.

Mine would show -1 if there's absolute no connection.

Put foam pads under the PU. What you are getting from OD is typical of S-500. I doubt changing PU will fix it, but I don't know.

Turn the treble down, see if that helps

Clicks is normal. Hum can be helped by shielding.

with it turned up you could here him talk into it through the amp ...lol .... bridge and neck were both noisy (microphonic) , any position with one of those two PU's amplified every touch beyond normal

it's a microphone, you can do that with all pickups. otoh, microphonic pups would not cause the loud hum when you touch the metal parts.

I'm probably not describing it right ... hum was from strings then eventually turning to squealling , I get a loud click when ever you touch something , pg , trem ,bridge , body , control knobs ..... Just hitting anything with a finger nail will make the loud click noise unless it's on middle pu , this is the only G & L I have that does this

Use this search criteria: microphonic +Gabe. You will find some information on resolving microphonic MFD pickups.
