where to buy new?

The place to discuss, post photos, video, and audio of the G&L products (US instruments, stomp boxes, etc.) produced after 1991, including the amps & gear we use with them.

where to buy new?

Post by cporro »

there are a few places near me that sell g&ls. there is also the g&l build tool. any suggestions for how to buy new? the only advantage i see in the local shop is maybe i could take it to them if there were issues. they could fix it maybe or ship it back to g&l for me. i'm thinking there will be no issues.

i don't know much about any of the shops that sell g&ls here so i don't know how well they would handle me or how fast they could get one ordered.

ideas? thanks.

ooops, thought i filled that out. san francisco. around here i think tall toad music is the place. they have about 10 g&ls in stock. but they are an hour drive in good traffic across the GG bridge. i'm going to call around tomorrow and check the inventory of some of the other shops.

If you know what you want on the guitar it should be as easy as sending an email to someone who can place the order. I've bought three from Upfront Guitars this way. The guy that runs the place, Gordon, is a helpful guy who will tell you if he thinks something will or wont work, or if it would look crappy. He advised me against the shoreline gold SC2 I ordered and I wish I'd listened to him! They have been a bit cheaper than the online builder says, if thats something to go by. BUT - if I had a shop near that would order me one at the same price I'd go there.

Have you checked the list of G&L US dealers? Here's the link from G&L's website: US Dealers .

I lived in Santa Rosa for 30 years until 2007. Tall Toad is a cool store--or at least they were when I lived there. If you do drive up to Petaluma, you might as well continue north on 101 to Santa Rosa since Stanroy's is also on the Dealer's list. When I lived there, Stanroy's was the store that sold school band equipment, violins and pianos--electric guitars and amps were not their specialty--I'm surprised to see them on the G&L dealers list.

Blue Note is across the bay in Berkeley. It also looks like you have another choice to your south in Santa Cruz.
I find it strange though that you do not have even one G&L Dealer in San Francisco......you have one an hour away in almost any direction.

san mateo is probably closest. that's basically south san francisco. but i intend on calling. being a dealer... i'm not sure what that really means. it is strange there is no store right in SF. i thought SF would be a good place for G&L.

Yeah, I missed that one in San Mateo.
Lack of SF dealers is really a head-scratcher--You would think a city with such a vibrant music scene would have at least one store willing to carry them.

Have you checked the SF Guitar Center for used G&Ls?

yeah, i ask every time i'm in there. it's always no. i would not be surprised if they were under contract not to sell G&L. just a guess. but i talked to an ebay seller the other day who said they sell the G&L online and not in the store because they are a fender dealer. he loved g&ls though.

i'm not a fan of guitar center. it's ok if you know your stuff and they have it in stock. just go get it. it's usually terrible if you don't know your stuff and need any type of guidance or knowledge. in 13 years i've met 2 guys there that really knew what they were talking about. both did not stick around long. shocker. : )

Tall Toad in Petaluma. I bought my first G&L there--a '99 Legacy which I still have and play regularly. They got me addicted, which lead me here (for well over a decade!). I was just at Tall Toad yesterday and was surprised to NOT see a single G&L. Times change.

I dislike the idea of dealing with GC, but I have bought quite a few G&Ls from them. The sales staff are going to be clueless about G&Ls 99.999% of the time. You have to do your research and know the details of the model you're after in order to be sure you get a good deal. I have seen them price G&Ls insultingly high (especially shiny recent ones), and also insultingly low. It's all the luck of the draw. I have seen dead stock Leo-era models described (and priced) as having bad mods, and poorly modded ones described as "improved". Again, it's luck of the draw.
