Jerry Cantrell Blue Dress Rampage
Hi there, I'm always thinking about my next guitar, which most probably will be a Jerry Cantrell Superhawk or an Invader, but a long shot is the Jerry Cantrell Blue Dress Rampage. It's only been a fantasy since that guitar is so pricey, but I'm trying to track down all the available Blue Dresses to get more info. Currently only know of one online shop that has one still in stock, I wonder if someone from G&L could give out a list of all the distributors those guitars were shipped to so I may bother each one asking if they still have one. I'd like to ask Craig, is that possible?
And one more thing about the Blue Dress, the description of the guitar says every one of those 50 (49 really since Jerry has #1) has his signature on the back of the headstock. That's not true as the top numbers don't have his signature. The one that I found available online is #6 and has no signature, the dealer said Jerry didn't sign the first few. Don't know if I could use the fact that it has no signature as advertised to ask for a price cut. Thoughts?

Re: Jerry Cantrell Blue Dress Rampage
Thank you Craig, I'm eager to hear from Dave especially regarding the missing hand signed signature at the back of the headstock. That's one of the main selling points of that guitar and one of the reasons why it's priced more than double the already quite costly Rampage in my opinion.
On the G&L website it states -
On the G&L website it states -
Surely it's not entirely crazy to ask for a re-evaluation of the price of a Blue Dress Rampage without Jerry's hand signed signature on the rear of the headstock...Each Rampage Jerry Cantrell “Blue Dress” guitar encompasses all of Jerry’s modifications and features of our Fullerton-made Rampage but with some very special upgrades and additions. Each “Blue Dress” will be signed by Jerry on the rear of the headstock, sealed in forever by factory-applied satin finish, a quarter-sawn hard-rock maple neck with ebony fingerboard, a Cantrell-designed Motor City humbucking pick-up and an edition-numbered “Blue Dress” graphic neck plate.

Hi Craig,
I don’t have an easy way to get that information, but even so, it’s so long ago that it’s unlikely a dealer would still have it. Some of them probably kept the guitar for their own collections. They can do that; it’s their prerogative. If I were him, I’d set up an ebay search with alerts so that if one comes up, he’ll know right away.
I don’t recall exactly what happened with the first few, but I vaguely recall some may have appliqué on top of the finish before it became done with a different technique under the finish. At least I remember us going through that process, but I can’t say for sure if the appliqué ones went out as official. Anyway, I’d characterize the some early ones as being prototype-ish, if that makes sense. If I were him I’d have no problem trying to get a discount on one like that. Doesn’t mean he’ll get it, but it’s a good case to make. My guess is that any dealer who had an issue with the guitar they got would have already resolved it with us, that is if they wanted to. Sometimes they may get something different and they won’t let go of it even if we plead with them. Again, that’s their prerogative.
Thanks, Craig.
Dave

Thanks Craig, and thanks Dave. I've had ebay set up to alert me if one pops up for a while now, and I think it is one of the most likely ways to find a Blue Dress. And who knows, it might pop up in the marketplace here someday?
And so the search continues...
And so the search continues...

Re: Jerry Cantrell Blue Dress Rampage
I wasn't aware of that, saw it here first from your post, so thank you for the notification Elwood. And talk about pricey! Everything is so attractive about that guitar but the price I'd have to say. Take out the custom graphics and it's almost the same specs as a regular Cantrell Rampage, the differences being a quarter sawn neck and the pickup. And yet this one is more than double the already quite expensive JC Rampage. The other upgrades are a flight case and case candy, which I doubt makes up for the difference in price. Will be interesting to see if anyone grabs this though...

Re: Jerry Cantrell Blue Dress Rampage
That's some serious pricy... almost piracy
I'd buy an old G&L and start sourcing applique's...might not have all the case candy.

Hey, I have the guitar #3 0f 50. Yes it is pricy. The reason for the price I got from G&L is because of all the royalties that get payed out. (Jerry, and the companies the made the stickers) That is also the reason there is no "Rock" stickers on it. The radio station wanted way too much money. Also the guitars are made by "hand" to old way, not by CNC. So everything was hand carved and sanded on the same tools and they had in the 80's. I am a custom guitar builder, so know what a pain it is to do. if you look at any true "quality hand made" guitars you will see its not that bad of a price. This guitar is a true art piece.

My 'piracy' comment was just for humor, even at a distance you can tell the guitar was made with integrity.
The royalty expense makes sense. I sorta figured that KISW was the wrench in the works as far as the Rock stickers go. Growing up in Seattle that was the first thing I noticed was awry...I plastered so many of those stickers on everything I owned and alot on things I didn't own
Good luck on your sale, and thanks for the info.Right now I'm taking a break from hand-rubbed finish coats , I hear ya !
Hope to see you around a bit more maybe...any other G&L's in your harem?

p.s. Are the appliques on top or below the finish on your #3 ?(notice Darth's post) ...just curious.

Hey Elwood,
This guitar is no proto-type, it really well done. All decals are below the finish. The only thing above the finish is Jerry's signature, which was done after production. This guitar was the forth G&L in my collection. I think G&L is way better them Fender all around. I wont touch a Fender.
Here is a email I had with Wolfgang:
Hi Elchiconut, thank you for the prompt reply. Yes I would like to get more info if you don't mind as I don't come across people who own a Blue Dress very often. Well I've never talked directly to anyone who's had one. All I've read from a couple owners on the forums is that this guitar plays very well. So what is your honest opinion on the playability of this guitar? And may I ask how you acquired it, did you get it straight from the factory? And yes I would love to see more pictures, but only if it's not a bother for you. Thanks!

Hey Wolfgang,
This is the seconded time I am typing this note (damn Ebay deleted the draft)
I ordered this guitar from a G&L dealer the morning it was released for sale. Only one other ordered faster than I did, he got #2 of 50 and Jerry Cantrell got the #1 of 50. I then waited about a year and a half to receive it. When I finally got it, it was not signed nor did it have the strap-locks on it. So I guess a few others got mad, and so G&L called everyone to over night the guitars back to the factory so Jerry could sign them the next day. Jerry was only going to be there for the one day (the every next day). So I got the guitar back the next week, hand signed and with all the extras promised.
As for the quality, it is supremely made. I also build custom guitars for a living so I am a tough judge on the workmanship and over all quality. The pickup has such a high out put, that I had to turn my amps way down to play. It is really interesting to see how Jerry likes to have his guitars set up. These guitars were made to go right from the factory to Jerry's hands on stage. (His exact set up) Because of the story of this guitar I have not play it much because I have been so afraid of scratching it. I have treated it like a museum art piece. (white gloves only) So this guitar is exactly as I got it from the factory.
This guitar is truly a piece of art and an icon in rock history.
Enjoy
Hi Elchiconut, thank you for your insightful response and extra thanks for writing it out one more time due to 'damn ebay' deleting your draft. This is like I said very insightful, I've been on the lookout recently for online dealers that sell this, and I only found one dealer offering it, guitar adoptions. It is #6 and has no signature. He just told me Jerry didn't sign the first few. He also claims to have #2 which he will only sell for list price which is like upwards of 6 grand. I was curious about the no signature on the back of the headstock of the first few like that dealer claimed and therefore brought up that topic on the G&L message board. The reply I got from a G&L higher up is that he can't remember clearly but they might have used 'applique' on top of the finish which I have no idea what that means. But he says the first few could be looked at as 'prototype-ish' and I could make a case for a discount from the fact that there is no hand signed signature on the back of headstock. So when I saw this listed here I automatically assumed it didn't have his signature. Well if you don't mind can I copy and paste your reply on that message board topic? Or maybe state the key facts in my own words? It will answer some questions and provide info for ppl wondering or just browsing. That is how I became aware of this listing anyway, some guy posted a link to your auction there.

Hey,
Thats funny that there is a forum dedicated to the questions about this guitar. I did buy the guitar threw Dave Shmit at Guitar Adoptions. I had asked and paid to have the lowest number possible. So if he has #2 0f 50 he screwed me on that end of the deal. So now I will add a few new details to the Ebay page that it is signed by Jerry. If Dave Shmit did not get a signature on #6, then I will bet that his #2 of 50 is not signed as well. There is a video made by G@L of Jerry signing #1 of 50, that video may be untrue, they started sending out guitars before Jerry had the chance to sign them so who knows what guitars had made it back to the factory in time to get it signed. (If Jerry was signing #1 of 50 he would of been signing his own guitar or G&L was untruthful about who got the #1) So Dave Shmit might not of even received his guitar #2 or #6 before the guitars had to go back to get signed. So I might have the Lowest numbered "signed" guitar released to the public. I don't know. There is more to the story then I might have realized. That is how art builds a story.
I can answer any other questions at any time to help get the story straight.
Thanks

Re: Jerry Cantrell Blue Dress Rampage
Hey Elchiconut, welcome to the forum. When I say pricey I'm just lamenting the fact that I can't afford it, damn royalties. Anybody who sees that guitar can tell it's a real work of art. Have you by any chance played the regular Jerry Cantrell signature Rampage? If you have is there any noticeable difference in playability with the Blue Dress? And is the sound very different due to the Motor City pickup?
http://guitarsbyleo.com/FORUM/viewtopic ... ss+rampage
This member called Megabones71 has #4 bought from I assume Guitar Adoptions as well as he recommends to someone to get it from there in the thread that he links to.
I have to say, if I had this guitar I'll probably be like you and be so careful and wary about putting any scratches on it. I don't think I'd feel at ease handling it at all! But having said that I'd be sure to get my money's worth and therefore play it as much as I could, whilst consciously trying to be extra careful with it...
Speaking of Guitar Adoptions, they have another limited edition G&L custom creations model that is 'pricier' than the average G&L, the Phyllis Fender Blondie. #2 out of 100 it claims. But the price is actually quite good. I'm okay with paying Phyllis Fender Blondie price for a guitar but not a Blue Dress price I guess... at least not yet.

Re: Jerry Cantrell Blue Dress Rampage
Hey Howlinwolf,
Because this guitar took so long to build that they sent me a free G&L Rampage just to tide me over until the blue dress was finished. So I actually have two. But the difference between the two is night and day. The blue dress is on such a higher level all around that there is no real comparison. The Motor city pickup is such a beast that it almost scary, I have never seen a higher out put pickup in my life. As for the price, I am asking way less than what I really want to sell it for.
I wonder as well if the person who has #4 had it signed and who he got it from?

The difference between the two is night and day? Damn...
So was it G&L or guitar adoptions that sent you that free Rampage? And is that Rampage a tribute or a Fullerton made? If it's a Fullerton made I'd be shocked, that's actually quite a sweet deal... Well getting a G&L guitar is quite the freebie regardless, very cool.
If we wanna play detective, I've seen videos of Jerry playing the custom creations Blue Dress, and initially I thought 'aha, that is the #1 out of 50 that he has.' But taking a closer look reveals that he's actually playing a Blue Dress with the prototype design which is a little bit different than the eventual Blue Dresses that got made.
Here is what the proto looks like - http://images.monstermarketplace.com/gu ... 00x312.jpg
And the regular Blue Dress -
http://wildwestguitars.com/images/produ ... llbody.jpg

If you hold frame at 3:52 you'll see that that's of the prototype design. Maybe even Jerry is a little wary about taking his #1 Blue Dress with him to gigs?

Hi there, welcome to the forum and congratulations on the guitar! If there is anything you would like to add regarding this Blue Dress please feel free to do so, although Elchiconut has made it very clear that it's one hell of a guitar. Or you could post pictures of it in the porn section, that'd be real guitar porn indeed. Nice to have you onboard!Mojofied wrote:Proud new owner of 03 of 50

One thing I will ad is that the signature is, as the previous owner noted, not under the finish.

Just a note, I have heard that the email can be a tricky route to go, hopefully Craig or someone appropriate will see this and help guide you into a situation that will be beneficial for you.
They also don't update their site that often, so there is that when it comes to the advertising.
They should be able to find a way t make this right for you though so as painful as it is to see such a inimical mark on your guitar patience and determination may be the best course of action.

Re: Jerry Cantrell Blue Dress Rampage
Hey Mojofied, when I saw that your ebay listing was taken down I figured that you must have had a change of heart about selling it, unless you found someone to sell directly to. And thank you for the objective insight, very helpful indeed. There wasn't much feedback/review of this guitar from people who have actually touched one out there on the internet and I'm glad that with this thread there has been some really useful info posted for anyone with an interest in this model. I imagined this guitar must be flawless considering it comes from the Custom Creations department and that hefty 5K street price. You just shattered that thought.
So some Blue Dress Rampages don't have the signature of our man Jerry Cantrell, and those that do aren't 'sealed in forever by factory-applied satin finish'. That's a shame. So consider the plight of Elchiconut, who received the guitar without the advertised signature, sent it back for the signature, and got the guitar back without the satin finish over the signature as advertised. Thankfully they didn't advertise that the string tree or the neck plate would be perfectly placed...
Regarding G&L's customer service and G&L's quality control, I have seen posts on this board about G&L not being responsive to customer emails and posts detailing issues for example with truss rod nuts not being drilled right.

Well let's just say that G&L, like any other guitar manufacturer, isn't perfect and has its 'doh' moments from time to time...
One last thing I wanna say about the Blue Dress, I really have my doubts that 50 of them were made.

Hey man. Yes I just decided to tell my lady to deal with the other naked lady. She is pretty conservative which is funny because she married rock musician lol. We made a deal and I am having a static cling vinyl piece made to go over the nakedness.
I grew up in Seattle and used to go see Jerry in his first band Diamond Lie when I was just a kid. This is before Layne joined and they took his old band's name Alice In Chains. They were sort of glam metal. Jerry was always cool. One of my biggest influences coming up as a guitar player in the late 80s in Seattle along with Kim Thayil and Stone Gossard when he was in Green River and Mother Love Bone. The woods, electronics, and playability of the instrument are phenomenal. Sounds amazing. The Motor City humbucker is spectacular.

G&L is going to refinish the headstock over the signature hopefully but we will see.

Mojo , I think the factory has been on a two week shut down , that might be why know ones got a hold of you yet ?? , they have a 10 year warranty on the neck , you need to be patient , Craig can get a hold of them pretty easy too

Re: Jerry Cantrell Blue Dress Rampage
I hear you. I certainly am not the most patient person.
As far as the warranty I believe that only applies to the original owner which is fairly standard as far as I understand. I could be wrong.
I am sure you have all heard enough about it. I have refrained from posting about it elsewhere or even talking about it with people other than these posts. I am not trying to drag the company's name through the mud.
I will update here if I get any response from the company. Otherwise thank you all for the replies and advice. Keep stringin'.

Re: Jerry Cantrell Blue Dress Rampage
All is good! Chris Roboson contacted me yesterday and within a couple hours he met with the director of manufacturing and they had an RMA number for me and are going to fix the finish issue with the headstock. Extremely nice and very helpful. I feel so much better I can't even describe it. Just awesome.
Thank you Craig for getting in touch with them on my behalf.
So. Believe the hype. Good customer service. Now that I know they were shut down for maintenance it definitely puts the response time in perspective. I do now believe this was an anomaly and not indicative of their level of QC in the custom shop after their immediate and deliberate response once they were aware of the problem. Good stuff.
Anyway thanks again for all the help and advice.

Just awesome, hope everything turns out great. And funny how your previous posts read differently now... hmm it's as if some things have been edited out... lolMojofied wrote:All is good! Going to gig her one more time tomorrow night before sending her in. She has officially knocked the Les Paul out of the club rig.

I'm sooo happy for you too, but I must admit I'm jealous and envious as well. And therefore I'm a little mad at you too. So in the introductions you mention that you got lucky to find and buy this Blue Dress guitar, would you care to elaborate on the story of how you acquired it? I was under the impression that #2 was being kept by the guy from guitar adoptions, at least that's what he told me. He said he'd sell only for list price which was over 6 grand. So how did you get this if you don't mind sharing?

Re: Jerry Cantrell Blue Dress Rampage
When I called I was expecting it was a internet page that wasn't updated, and that any Blue Dress guitars were long gone. When he said he did have one I was surprised, and it was #6 as well (sweet!!) After talking to him a bit he mentioned he was a big dealer for G&L guitars, and had a big allotment of the Blue Dress Rampages. I was curious and asked him if that was the only Blue Dress(#6) he had left. He said he only had one other and it was his personal one(#2) and that he wouldn't sell it for less than list price. I was getting ready to leave work and told him I'd call him back when I got home. I thought about it on the drive home. I decided If I'm already spending close to $5k on it already, I should just try to get #2. Maybe I could get him to come down a little? I got him down from $6600 but not much. In the end I'm glad I ponied up the premium to get #2. I'm a huge fan of AIC and Jerry Cantrell from their beginning, and #2 is in good hands. I guess I was just in the right place at the right time for once, along with a healthy desensitization for money
I've since bought 2 more Rampages from Guitar Adoptions too. A USA Rampage in whiskey that I'm going to customize like a Whiskey colored Blue Dress, and a Tribute Rampage in ivory. I just ordered 2 afwayu humbuckers yesterday from motor city pickups for both of em, also a tolex case for the tribute rampage and red monkey guitar straps for both. I'm giving the Tribute Rampage to my niece(10) and nephew(12) for Christmas along with a Krank Rev Jr amp, and a Martin Acoustic with a package of lessons at the local guitar center. I wish I had gotten a nice guitar when I was a kid.
Anyway enjoy the $2k you saved and #3 is still really badass!!!! do you have more pics of it you could post? maybe one of the signature?
Also could you tell me how you got your RMA for getting the signature on the headstock protected with clear coat Damn I'm already scheming how to afford #6
I just reread this thread and realized it was mojofied that has #3, if you don't have a blue dress yet Howlinwolf I'd be jumping all over #6 the whole package is over the top. I couldn't think of much more G&L could've added to the package, they really went all out on the presentation ... you might talk him down a few hundred on the price too, but really I don't think you want to pass on this guitar...pull the trigger on it before somebody else does f__k the money

Re: Jerry Cantrell Blue Dress Rampage
Hey blu, yeah mojofied is the lucky dude that has #3, the story of that #3 is detailed in the previous posts but one main thing about it is that it didn't come with the signature and had to be sent back to G&L to get it signed. And since pictures of #4 and #6(both offered by guitar adoptions in addition to #3) show that they don't have the signature, I just assumed #2 didn't have the signature as well. But I guess Dave somehow found a way to get Jerry's signature, and I think he did it via a different method than what the original owner of #3 Elchiconut did by sending it to G&L for the day Jerry was there to sign the guitars. I say that because the signature on #3 and #2 is a little different, yours has AIC written on it whilst #3 doesn't. And the signature looks a little rushed on #3 unlike on #2. So do you know how Dave got your #2 Blue Dress signed? If you don't you might want to ask Dave, he might have a cool little story for you, or did #2 come without the signature and you got Jerry to sign it?
When I was first told by Dave that he had #2 and was willing to sell it but only at list price, I couldn't stop fantasizing about getting that. Thinking that Jerry has #1 and I'll have #2, how cool was that? But alas, Jerry has #1 and YOU have #2. So kudos to you and I'm kinda mad at you. So for anyone reading this that is interested, #6 is probably the last remaining brand new Blue Dress Rampage you'll ever find for sale on the internet. I appreciate your advice blu about getting it but I just can't get myself to spend that much money on a guitar, at least not right now. At this point I'd rather get a USA Rampage and have it custom painted to look like a Blue Dress. I was looking at the work of Dan Lawrence, looking through a gallery of some of the custom paint jobs he has done on guitars and they are phenomenal. I might use his services someday.
The Motor City Afwayu pickup, can you confirm that that is the one that comes stock on the Blue Dress? Because I've read that Jerry uses the Afwayu pickup on his guitars, but on the Blue Dress specs it says that a custom wound Motor City pickup is installed on the guitar. And since you're going to have the opportunity to compare the Afwayu to the pickup on the Blue Dress, please let me know if that 'custom wound' Motor City pickup on the Blue Dress is indeed the Afwayu. Thank you.
And what a nice thing you're doing for your niece and nephew, they must be so stoked. All that banging stuff you're giving them, along with lessons! How great must it have been if one of my uncles gave me equipment like those as a kid... And also please keep us updated on how your customization of the Whiskey Rampage goes, best of luck!

Re: Jerry Cantrell Blue Dress Rampage
#4 here. Mine was sent back to g&l for Jerry to sign, arrived a day late, and missed the man. They ended up sending it to his management to catch up with him, then back to me. I remember debating whether I wanted to send it anywhere. Outside of missing sig and locks, it was perfect! And yes, I also ordered from Dave.
U guys that decided to jump on an opportunity to score one of these won't be disappointed! Congrats!!
Has anyone made issue of, or found a solution to the sig not being sealed?

Re: Jerry Cantrell Blue Dress Rampage
I called them a few months back and if I remember correctly they said it would need to be be sent in and i'd have to pay for it, they recommended I try to find someone near me do it. So I called Mike Lull guitars because i'd had them work on some guitars for me. They said they wouldn't do it because the sealing process could cause a chemical reaction and destroy the signature, and referred me back to G&L. It kinda bothers me that its not sealed, and I'd really like to have G&L do it, especially on such a badass guitar. Congrats on #4!!! I'll call them again and see what they say, if you call them, please post the info they give you, and I'll do the same.

Re: Jerry Cantrell Blue Dress Rampage
Thx. That's a bit lame since it's advertised as such. I may just let my ride and if there's ever an issue w/ the sig, I'll let them take care of it. Definitely keep me posted and I'll do the same.
