New (M2000) Bass Day.

What a remarkable instrument G&L has produced.
For the few Bassists who lurk here:
If you haven't heard or played the M-series basses- Do it!
G&L has outdone the rest of the US and foreign high-end Bass builders with the deadly combination of the M-series pre-amp, MFD's, and overall G&L Bass build quality.
Combine the fine fit and finish of the 2000 series (and the rest of the pack!) body, the killer components like the saddle-lock and tuners, the well-shaped and radiused necks, and game over.
NOTHING near the build quality and TONE/SOUND of the M2000 bass.
Not a thing.
Pay 3X as much, feel free, it won't overcome what this instrument produces when you plug it in.

It's a bit different than the L2K's, a bit different of course than "Vintage" G&L's- But IMO, don't live in the past! Enjoy the old 'hogs, and L1000's, El Toros, etc.
But for the here and now and for quite a while I should think, the M2000 Bass is 110% the Business.

Mine is dead stock, only a 1/4-sawn neck, standard finish on alder, none of the great options offered-
But WHAT A PLAYER!

I'm stoked, and if anyone from G&L reads or can relay this-
Thanks for the craftsmanship and obvious love put into the build.
It will and does bring the FUNK!
I Love it! :happy0065:

Yep, lovin' it; Thanks G&L Bass Designers/Builders!

I thought American Guitar & Band might have one, but they only show an ASAT & SB-2..
Nonetheless, I'll wager you'll be as stoked as I am when you play one! 8-)

Larry,

That's a beautiful bass. How would you describe the difference in tone from the L-2000?

Wassup G&L Bass-luvers?
Thanks for the replies! Nothing like sharing the AWEsomeness! :happy0007:

Fumble, the color IS Graphite Metallic, it's a standard finish, and I think it's fantastic. G&L really kills it in the "paint dept"
their bursts, the metalflakes, all super nice.
When I went "M" shopping online, there were some nice finishes, including a NENA, and a Cherryburst, but Yeh, I really like this with this new strap:
Image
Kinda Python-like :o

KenC:
I had both an ASAT and the CLF L2K w/ the "Ramos" hand-wound pups, voiced differently than the standard L2K.

What G&L did, from a technical aspect (and I'm not technical) was underwind the pups and modify the preamp; 18V, cut/boost, etc.
Best way I can describe:

The M is not as mid-ranged as the L2k, the MFD's don't "bark" as hard as they do on an L-series.
They are PLENTY ballsy, and I find that their is an inherent powerful Low-End on the M which I actually need to tame by lowering Bass at both amp and onboard. I also boost the mids; sometimes treble on the M.

I never had any issues with the tri-tone, I dug it, and actually played in passive mode most of the time with my Asat; and the "OMG" position as it is called (series or parallell, I forget) where the Mid-toggle is toward the neck- I was almost scared to play! Rarely if ever boosted treble in active mode either on the Tri-tone

The M is more refined, and the cut/boost is a little more intuitive. I think the M series sounds a bit more focused and even; at least it almost defaults to that when everything is flat.

Every player with their rig and style/attack will be different, but in general, I would say that the L-series Tri-tone/MFD combo is a bit more brittle and mid-rangy than the M, which has an inherently "richer" tone, to my ears.

One isn't better or worse, just different.

However, I do have to say- For me, as far as G&L Bass goes, it's M all the way; they should even do an M1500!

The JB and SB and now LB are different animals of course.

IMO, the M series G&L basses are the leader in the field of "stuff" today; and there's a lot of good "stuff"

I honestly can say that I feel that "other" basses such as the Nordstrand-equipped, the Sadowsky line, anything with Barts, Duncans, or EMG's fer instance, also the odd ones like T-Bird clones, Darkstars, etc.... I have or have had ALL of these spec'd instruments and IMHO:

A G&L M preamp with MFD's- Genius, awesome, brilliant. Just killer, and combined with the quality build that is a trademark of G&L...Win.

And the price...?? OMG, do not tell BBE or they'll raise it

I can only speak for myself on anything above, but you might be able to tell-
I like this Bass a lot.

Larry,

Thanks for the detailed info. My next G&L will probably be a new bass, so I've been mulling over the options. My current G&L bass lineup is almost entirely Leo-era, with a '98 ASAT Bass and a '00 L-2K fretless thrown in. The ASAT and L-2K sound great, but I'm really partial to the low end of the early L-series 'hogs, and the strong midrange of the Lynx and El Toro. I've been leaning more and more about an L-1500 for the "modern" sound, but your comments on the M-2000 have me thinking...

That graphite metallic finish looks great. I saw it in person on an SC-2 recently. There was a depth to it that photos just can't convey.

Can't go wrong with any choice.
There were a couple L1500's that really appealed to me, but I threw down with the M-series, and am glad I did!

Finding and test-driving a model is always the best bet, more so to find quality time to spend with one & your rig, or in performance, etc.
Not always possible of course.

I just got done 'shedding (between posts! :D ) Some Jeffrey Osborne, Joss Stone, and JAMES BROWN!

...It just keeps getting/sounding Better & Better that "M",
dang I love this bass- and yes, the finish is terrific!

Hey Larry, nice looking bass! Glad to hear you're enjoying it so much too.

In your search for this bass did you come across one of the new LB100's at all? I have one on order despite having never played/seen one in the flesh

Thanks, enjoying it more and more!

I did see a beautiful Sunburst LB, and just now, another one! THIS:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/G-L-LB-100-3-To ... 58a0aaee86

You'll not be disappointed I can guarantee! I never played the M-series before I received mine, and look at me now! :happy0007:

You only get 1st-rate builds with G&L, and whether it's a Passive or Active Model, they produce!

BBE Bringing back the LB and earlier the SB-1 is too kewl for the room IMO.
These are great basses! And they did so with no fanfare, barely on the radar!

Between the current line-up, the Factory Prototypes, the Ltd Editions (Savannah, Korina, etc.) and check this beaut out:

http://www.agandb.zoovy.com/product/CLF ... -Bass.html

Whoa! Where did that come from??? 8-)

"Equatorial Mahogany" Can you imagine how THAT is going to sound?? IF I hadn't shot too many wads on gear, I'd LOVE to have that bass! Wow, G&L, way to go!

Congrats on the LB, great choice, That P-Bass will hang with ANYTHING on the market-ANYTHING!
Build-Wise, sound-wise,it will probably exceed the "boutique" P-Bass models (YOU know who I'm talking about, eh? ;)

Only place it will lag behind is in Price!
How cool is THAT!!!!
