g&l legacy tremelo tuning

Post by ADYAPOOP »

hello everybody,

My legacy HB just arrived a yesterday. THe guitar is gr8! the only problem is when I barely use the tremelo, the low E string and G string go sharp. but when I don't have the tremelo arm in , it stays in tune perfectly. any thing I can do on my own to fix it rather than take it in and have them work on it , I'd hate to have to let it go after playing it for only a day hahaha.

thanks,
corey

new note.. now the low E string and the G string tunes up without the tremelo arm in...

I blocked the trem on my G&L Legacy and am more then happy with it. No hacking involved btw, I simply cut a piece of hard maple to fit between the trem block and the body in the back of the guitar, then glued it in with super glue (cuz then it would be easy to take out if I want later). The piece was approximately 2"x5/8x1/4. This allows me to tighten down the springs so that it is like a hard tail, but I can still use the trem for dips if I want.

BTW, I'm not saying this is a solution, I just really liked the result for me. And it is magic when changing strings of pickups as it barely moves.

What size strings for you use?

Best thing for now...play it! Do some gentle quavers with the vibrato, both up and down. Then some deeper bends. This action will help smooth the nut and mate the knife edge of the vibrato plate to the posts.

I use the Big Bends Nut Sauce on my guitars. You only need a tiny amount in the slots. Some folks swear by Carmex Lip Balm. And be sure that the double-wound ends of the strings do not cross or even touch the apex of the saddles. That extra wrap can cause all kinds of problems.

It should be okay in a few days. There's really no reason to block it...the DFV is one of the most stable systems around.

I should have stated, my trem did not NEED to be blocked, it is a great working tremolo, but I like it a lot better with it blocked because I don't use the whammy function all that much. But it really is a great working tremolo system.

I agree with the previous poster.

Step one: Lubricate the nut slot. You can use Carmex, Big Bends, I've even heard of people using graphite.

Step two: Play. A lot. Dive bomb that trem, retune, repeat. Stability should come.

It sounds to me like your nut slots just aren't "broken in" yet.

the best lubricant i have found is buzzy's honey slick. much better than big bends. lead from old pencils work well too, but newer pencils do not actually have lead in the lead, and do not lubricate nearly as well. but if you have 30+ year old #2 pencils laying around, those lubricate the nutslots well.
