Bluesboy 90 with a mini-humbucker
Now that the Bluesboy 90 is available - a great development, although the demise of the Classic Custom is also a little sad as I was definitely considering ordering one in the future - does anything think it would be possible to order one with a mini-humbucker in the neck?
I already have a Junior II with the Paul Gagon P90s and I must say that I love them but I've always wanted an ASAT with a small MFD at the bridge and a mini in the neck, somewhat like the Fender Hot Rod Tele but in G&L form.
I'm not sure if this would even be feasible but I understand that minis normally fit in P90-sized gaps. Previously the pickguard would have been one of the biggest obstacles but has this been changed by the new model?
I don't know what other people think. Obviously G&L should be very proud of their new P90s, which I really enjoy, and I would understand if they had no interest in offering this, even as a one-off customisation, but I'd love it if they could do it for me.

Re: Bluesboy 90 with a mini-humbucker
I find the Bluesboy 90 seriously attractive, just for what it is, unmodified. I am having the final thoughts on order spec right now!
Mine will also be destined to get modified a little, and this is sensitive territory. I'm concerned lest anyone thinks I'm casting doubt on Gagon's pickups, or any G&L pickup for that matter. I truly am not. I fully expect to enjoy the 90 hugely for what it is. And I do find G&Ls special and valuable.
But it is also my dream customisable Asat Classic! It goes like this:
I really like a Tele with a P90 in. My preferred Tele is an Asat, no question. My WR Asat is the best all-around guitar I've ever had in all my decades, and I'm just thinking of what I'd like to play with along the lines of a regular Tele as well here.
The last thing I would put in a Tele is a big humbucker (that's just personal).
I'd like to try Curtis Novak's "Narrow Range" pup in there (a sort of P90 form, but with adjustable threaded magnets in the coil, more like a Fender type but with balance adjustability).
I'd like to try a pickguard-mounted Strat-type, or S-500 type, at the neck. I like my neck pup a little further from the fingerboard than stock Tele position. And the P90 rout is in that spot, plus it will allow some adjustment trial-and-error to taste, along the string length. A humbucker rout doesn't do that, the Strat pup will only go in at the centre axis of the bucker, the corners are no-go's unless you rout out (which I won't do; any kind of modding of mine is always respectful and responsible, I never tear up any guitar).
The Classic S isn't for me, great though it is (I already have the WR,which covers that ground amazingly) and I don't need that much rout. But the P90 body promises a lot.
After all that, there's a big chance it will just stay as a Bluesboy 90! Anything I do, I can undo, that's a rule.
A minibucker (Les Deluxe? Firebird?) should fit in with only very moderate luthiery.
If G&L don't offer this (and I tend to doubt they will; I've never heard of a G&L mini) then fitting one in a P90 space can't be any big challenge for a good tech. Great idea!

Just for the sake of fantasizing and as you're considering minihums, you or G&L should think about an MFD humbucker in the neck slot!

That would almost be too good to be true! Sounds a bit like the modified Fallout they're making for the forum.Xochitl wrote:Just for the sake of fantasizing and as you're considering minihums, you or G&L should think about an MFD humbucker in the neck slot!

The LE-2 wil have a MFD humbucker on the bridge et a P90 on the neck. Looks nice nonetheless!

Re: Bluesboy 90 with a mini-humbucker
I offered G&L a purchase order for 6 guitars built to Savanna spec with an alnico in the bridge and a Duncan mini hum in the neck for my anniversary run. It would be cool one for sure.

Re: Bluesboy 90 with a mini-humbucker
ask and you will receive! As one of James' customers, sign me up if you get that order. For those of us who already have the full gamut of ASAT options (classic, bluesboy, junior, junior 2, super, etc...) a mini humbucker would be too cool to resist. That pickup in the neck position can be heaven and is exactly the pickup I play with my Les Paul Deluxe.....the right amount of midrangey honk when getting a good rock crunch ala Thin Lizzy. With the snappiness that the Savannah boasts about, this one would probably not be in it's case much. Hope you get to celebrate your anniversary run James, so that we can too!

I put a Lollar Firebird pickup in my Bluesboy and it sounds oh so sweet. The only downside was having to order a new pickguard.

So I am sending Paul a Duncan Mini to play with and get the design ready. We will have a Bluesboy Mini.
