1995 3 bolt legacy value
A 1995 3 bolt neck Legacy with green see through body and BEM neck showed up on my craigs list. The guy wants $1200 because it is mint with no scratches and has OHSC. He said there is 1 on ebay for $1600 BIN. I told him to look at only Legacy guitars that had actually sold. I see they are in the $550-$650 range. I offered him $700 if it was in the shape he says it is. Is my c..k out a mile on this $700 offer. Any advice on pricing would be appreciated. TNX

What's that?green swirl wrote:and BEM neck
700 US$ would be good enough. 1200 is far too much.

Thanks Smiles: That's what I kind of figured too. Any body else chime in with opinions?

BEM neck = Bird's Eye Maple neck.Miles Smiles wrote:What's that?green swirl wrote:and BEM neck

In near mint condition with a premium finish and BEM neck upgrade I could see it going up to $800. It sounds like you made a reasonable offer though.

Thanks for the input....I gave the guy all the info I could and he was a bit pissed because he thought I was lowballing him. I love the guitar but will never pay a 50% premium on it. Advised him to keep it or have extraordinary luck selling it. He said a grand was as low as he could go. I have a mint US strat (used) i paid $700 for with mint case. It is sad but values go down. That's how most of us can buy good guitars at a price we can afford. More is better IMOO. There is always another that comes along that is more perfect and cheaper. GAS is inevitable.

We can't discuss the price of new G&Ls in this forum, but go to AGB's "G&L Builder" at http://www.americanguitarboutique.net/Guitar_index.html and spec out a new Legacy with that same finish and a BEM neck. The price this guy is asking is not far at all from what it would cost to have the same instrument built to your specs and shipped to you directly from the factory.green swirl wrote:Thanks for the input....I gave the guy all the info I could and he was a bit pissed because he thought I was lowballing him. For me personally a 3 bolt is more attractive, but most people are thinking a 3 bolt neck is bad, so one could argue this way too.KenC wrote: The price this guy is asking is not far at all from what it would cost to have the same instrument built to your specs and shipped to you directly from the factory.

On something similar to CL, a 3-bolt Legacy Special is currently offered right 50 drive minutes away. The negotiable price is 650 € incl. OHSC, which is compareable to 650 $, current exchange rate doesn't matter in this case.
If it wasn't black with a rosewood fretboard and if not I already had a Legacy, but no special on the other hand, and if I had room for it, I would have already been there for sure.

He'll have a hard time getting any more than you offered. G&Ls have poor resale and almost no collectability. Additionally, condition and options really don't increase the value on the used market.
That said, when I'm selling, people who make offers through e-mail tick me off too. The way I see it, If you're gonna make an offer, especially one that far below asking price, you do it in person with cash in hand.

Re: 1995 3 bolt legacy value
IHA. I agree with you on the value of this guitar but I do not agree with you other statements about collectability and resale. If your talking about collectability lets look at collectability and what is collectible. Are you talking about vintage Fenders and Gibsons? There are very few truly collectible vintage instruments left. Many advertised on e-bay are not truly vintage as they have been modified to look vintage. If we're talking about more recent models, I would agree that the G&Ls are extremely good buys. It is not that long ago that I had 17 Fenders. I have tried to buy Fenders that were limited, thinking that the value would increase. Recent models since 1980 are probably not going to increase a great deal. They are not vintage instruments by todays standards. But in looking at what Fender is producing, where they are going to be producing, (China??) I have recently been selling off some of my Fenders and I am happy with the results. But, in todays world things are changing and I think that G&L has a quality product that Fender has no reason to produce. I see Fenders all day long on e-bay and CL (American standards and American Deluxe) going dirt cheap. They are a dime a dozen. I also see a few G&Ls and they are good buys from the get go. I have bought many G&Ls that are one offs and the options and features do make a difference when it comes to selling. I am a buyer. Musicians are a strange lot but they understand value. I am increasing my G&L group and yes, down the road I think they will do okay. They are not cookie cutter guitars and I think will increase in value in the future. The question really is "Why are you playing a G&L" If the others were better you would be playing them. We can't look at this from a vintage standpoint but have to weigh the product for it's current value to the player. I am betting that G&L will be a good value. There are others on this forum who would share this view based on the G&Ls they own. I hope that I am right but I have to say that the product is what is my meets my expectations and contributes to satisfaction in the end. My G&Ls will not be sold cheap. They are worth more to me in the end.-- Darwin

i prefer someone making a low offer before hand, so i can tell them no, and not waste time. it ticks me off if they try to low ball in person with cash in hand.

Re: 1995 3 bolt legacy value
Thanks Guys: Great help from you all and I agree on what you said. For each situation one of your answers is right. In this case I am 300 miles away and cannot pop over and have a look. In this case the price seemed more than a little high and I wanted to see how low he would go before making a trip and sucking a tank of fuel and 10 hours of my time. If he was in the same town I'd just go look and offer an appropriate price. I've had to use both methods and they have their place. It's a beauty but we all have our limits to spend. I might have gone $$750 -$800 if I saw it in person. Another one got away dag gummit. LOL. Even a room full ain't enough sometimes....just 1 more to save from destruction.
