NOTE: I moved your post (and renamed the topic).

Here's the S-500 control layout (but with the expander switch as a toggle switch). The expander function on yours is when the volume knob is pulled up.



The tone controls are called the PTB (Passive Treble and Bass controls). See this post in the G&L Knowledgebase Re: Is my PTB circuit faulty?.
