1999 Butterscotch Blond with All Black Hardware & black MFD

Post by AcoustiCameron60 »

Just picked this up this weekend. Headstock Says G&L ASAT, serial # CL09938 Apparently it was part of a small batch made for Universal Music Canada for one of their bands called "Tragically Hip" I think they are unique due to the Hardware being all black.

Anyone else have one or know anything else about them?

Thanks.

Welcome to GbL! I don't know about that special run, but the serial number puts production in late '97 or '98. IMO that was a really good time for ASATs, as G&L was just starting the Custom Creations Department and was working on a lot of innovations with ASAT models. I love my '98 ASAT Classic.

Black hardware was the norm on many G&L models from about '82 through the early 90s, and is just starting to show up again on a couple of new models. It would had to have been a special run to have black hardware in the late 90s.

If you can post a photo or two, we might be able to give you more information.

I have a late 90's "CL" S-500 and that was a great time. Great...

Very nice looking Asat. I like the mineral streaking in the neck. Hope you get it set up so it plays to your liking. -- Darwin

Hmm, is this your craigslist posting? If it is, then you will need to post this in the Marketplace not on the G&LDP.

Yes, that's what he says, but why then did the seller re-list the craigslist ad? :confused0077:

For the love of Pete, calm down, It's not for sale, I only posted the ad so the folks here that wanted to see pics could. I've got it in the shop getting the frets recrowned & a nice set up. She's a keeper, I just wanted to find out more about her & if anyone else has the same model.

I don't know about this guitar for sure, but I'd guess that the dealer got G&L to ship some ASATs using leftover black hardware. I don't mean anything negative by "leftover", just that the ASAT line had gone to all chrome several years earlier. It could also have been a regular late-90s ASAT Special with a hardware swap by a previous owner to have the looks of an 80s ASAT. IMO a special order by the dealer would be the more likely case.

I contacted Dave McLaren about this and he said:
Hi Craig,

I already gave him everything I could about it including the Universal Music info, so, he's on his own from there.
Would have been nice if he at least mentioned I'd researched it for him. No biggie.

Thanks!

Dave

My apologies, I hadn't realized that it was you from this site, I had posted to several related sites, my sincere apologies.

I appreciate your taking the time to share your info with me. I've got her back from Bob's Music in Kitchener & she plays & sounds like a dream, the MFD pups are unique sounding.

Again, thanks.

Hey, I hope everyone is doing well. I'm the new owner of this ASAT. I picked it up tonight and it sounds great! Rather than start a new thread can someone please fill me in on the details of this guitar? I'd love to know more about its connection to The Tragically Hip as well as any other info that could be beneficial. Thanks!

Thank you for those kind words, friend. The owner was trying to trade the ASAT for my amp for over a month. I finally gave in and I'm glad I did, haha. The strings are old and it still sounds amazing!

Welcome to GbL, and congrats on the ASAT! As I mentioned to the OP, the serial number is from '97 or '98. Photos would help with filling in the details.

Believe it or not, I don't like the black hardware. I've thought about swapping it out but I won't touch it if I find out the guitar was actually made for the Tragically Hip. I'd hate to compromise its integrity, haha.

It's fun to play and I love the sound of the MFD pickups. Its tone sits comfortably between my American Standard Strat and my Gibson SG Standard. The controls are also very responsive. I restrung the guitar last night with 10's and she sings!
