Incoming Korina ASAT Junior II

Post by tbp0701 »

I was going to wait until I received it before starting a thread, but I'm really looking forward to this and have to share. I also just saw the estimated delivery date has changed from the 29th to April 1st and felt a bit of a kick, but Seattle to Cleveland is a long trip. Too bad I can't tell UPS that, wherever it is Friday, I'll come and get it.

Also, thanks to the forum and James at The Guitar Store Seattle for helping with the decision.

Thanks, Jos.!

If I let it slip to a couple members of my family that I have a guitar coming on April Fool's, they may be way too tempted to pull something.

Excellent choice. They're one of the nicest guitars I've ever played - if I had the money I'd pick up a second one. Have you seen the autumn burst one on the prototype page? Holy moly.

Thanks. I saw that and the Spalted Alder prototype shortly after I ordered and had a brief moment of hesitation. Then I looked at the one I bought again, got that "oh yeah" feeling and thought it's going to feel like a long wait.

I once bought a G&G case which arrived in a "Daisy Rock, Guitars for Girls!" box. I got home to some questions asking what I'd bought and what I was expecting. I guess the UPS guy wondered, too.

As for April Fool's, yeah. I am a bit nervous about the guitar's being in UPS' care for nearly 2,500 miles, so I'd be an easy target.

It arrived today, so I'm glad I typically have Mondays free. Since the temperature dropped to freezing again, I waited a few hours for the box to warm up. It's definitely a beautiful guitar. As for playing it, I'll have to get a little more used to it and possibly let it adjust more after its trip. I had fret buzz and raised the action a little higher than I typically do to alleviate it, and I'll have to make sure it's not me, as well. I'm liking it okay so far, but it is a departure from what I'm used to (not only my first G&L, but my first guitar with P90s, tune-o-matic bridge or a korina body), so I'll see how I adjust.

Tim - I had to raise the action on mine higher than I'd usually have it too. It took me a couple of days to get used to it but now the slightly higher action on that guitar just feels "right". It's an angry snarling beast of a guitar so IMO it feels right to have to fight it more than usual to get the best out of it. I highly recommend going up to a set of size 11 strings when you do eventually get used to it

And I totally agree that they're completely unlike a lot of guitars! I hope come to love it.

Thanks, Jamie. I've spent more time with it today, am getting used to it and liking it more. I'm not sure if I should put this in the porn section, but here are a couple of quick phone shots (with a bonus messy background of a portion of one of the bookshelves).

There was quite a bit of variation amongst these (knobs etc), but this one looks like mine.

And thats an excellent, proper bookshelf: things stuck in however they fit - its the same at my place

can't you see that's the self portrait of the owner? you can see the arms, head and camera.

Another beautiful G&L! I wonder why the action has to be higher? Sounds like the neck relief is a bit off or does it have a fret issue?-- Darwin

Right, that's an unflattering blob of a self portrait, complete with a reflection of an overhead light.

darwinohm - I'm not sure. I decided I'd raise the bridge a bit, as I'm far more comfortable doing that than turning the truss rod (and prefer a straight neck), which seems to have fixed it. It's not drastic; 6/64" between the bottom of the E strings and the top of the 12th fret.

I love my Junior II, really wish it had a belly cut and a forearm cut.

Mine seems to have settled. I initially still had some buzz when raised to 6/64" at the 12th fret, but it's stopped. And the P90s really are a nice combination of "sparkle and sinew."
