Adjusting Legacy Volume and Tone Knobs

Post by reevus »

To take off the volume and tone knobs to reposition them a bit - is there a best procedure to not muck anything up? What's the best way to get them off the control stems? Some input would help before I start tugging on them.

Thanks.

If you use a screwdriver you'll damage the pickguard and possibly the knob.

Best way is to using a shoelace, or a thin cloth like a hankerchief, wrapped around the underside of the knob to gently lift it off the shaft.

And if you do a lot of these, you can get a special little tool from Stew-Mac.

Good luck!

i use a wide flat head screw driver that fits between the knob and the washer. then slightly twist it. move the knob a bit and repeat. once i get it all around, it just pulls off and there is no damage. the washer protects the pg.

You can do it that way, Louis, of course. And if you are careful, no problem. But...if the blade slips...the results can be disastrous. And I've seen the results. Just saying...

you are right bill, you have to be careful. disaster can happen. there are several ways, and your works well as long as the knob is not on too tight.
