Humming B string on G&L Legacy (USA 2007)

Hi,

I hear (to my ears) some pretty loud noise from the B string of my G&L Legacy. Is this normal? It's the same on all positions.

It happens with different types of speakers even. The guitars has the standard single coil pickups.

Nobody had any feedback on this one?

I have used copper-tape to shield the cavity where the pickups go, in addition to have some of this tape on the pickguard,where the pickups are. And it seemed to lesser the noise. Even though I didn't complete the operation by grounding by soldering a cable etc.

I did end up removing the copper shielding..

anyway, move along nothing to see here. The problem was obviously ground...

I don't know, it seemed to me like the tone changed, and I didn't ground it inside, cause I didn't have time to do it then. And I just like to fiddle.. I might do it again sometimes, properly.

Although, now I don't hear any noise, so I don't see any reason to...

I had issues with copper as well. I would be interested to see how it was set up.

Try paint next time. Stewmac has graphite paint. Need to do 3 coats.
It does work. As for the pickguard, copper or aluminum I thing would work fine.

The graphite paint is easy to work with. Make sure you shake the can good. Paint. Shake the can some more. Paint some more. The graphite tends to settle. Water will clean off the brushes. Use Q-tip to get the insides of the channel between control and jack plate. Graphite does not smell toxic. Easily done in garage.

Nickel paint is toxic. Messy. Smells. Need to wear gloves, at the minimum. Hard to get the channel with a spray can.
But, it conducts better and you don't have to do 3 coats.

I didn't really have issues with it, I should've grounded the pickups I guess, as the video by greasygroove showed. But I was a bit impatient...

The guitar made som some noises when I pushed no the pick guard, so I decided to remove it (before a gig).

I might try it again sometime, but it doesn't really matter as long as the amp is grounded.

Do you just foil it, or do you solder the pickups to ground aswell?

i don't like the foil, i like the sheets. the pickups are already grounded. you need to ground the shielding.

I meant the shielding on the pick guard, not necessary perhaps? Anyway, last time I tried, the guitar made some noise when I pushed on the pick guard :/

you need an aluminum plate that fits the pickguard, available at callaham for example. it will be grounded automatically, as the pot housing will ground it. if it made noise when you pushed suggests that there was a connection problem, or that the switch or another part was intermittently touching the shielding. you should put electrical tape on the shielding where possible contact can occur.

You need to fold the copper sheet and solder the ends together. What a pain that is.
Someone did a test on different material for shielding, and they found no difference.
Using the paint will let you paint the channel to the jack. I've done both. Paint is much easier.
The only thing copper or aluminum you will need is for the pickguard. Hopefully someone has one made and you can just glue it on.

Don't forget. Ground wire from tremolo connects to the cavity. From the cavity wire connect to the back of the pot.
All pots should touch the copper/aluminum shield on the pickguard.

no need to glue anything on. those aluminum pickguard sheets are removable/reusable. the switch, pots and pups hold it to the pg.
