Pinning the DF on a Comanche

Post by el cajone »

I recently bought a used Comanche and I took it in to my guitar guy for a setup. Since I don't use the trem bar, he suggested that the DF should be pinned (easier to play, stays in tune longer etc.). He pinned the DF by putting 2 small spruce blocks in the cavity on the back side of the guitar. Now the guitar sounds buzzy, bright and shimmering and I can't get a tone out of it that I like.

Is there a proper/better way to pin the DF?

i think the df work perfectly well even if it's not blocked.

Set up properly the DF is very stable. Get those blocks out of there and use the guitar as it was intended. Get the guitar set up to factory specs. Use good strings and wind them properly around the posts. I use Big Bends Nut Sauce in the slots. I use Fender Super Bullets in9-42 gauge and rarely have to tune more than once during a four hour gig.

That how you get the best tone from that guitar. Then relax, play your ass off and feel the joy!

Thanks Louis and Boogie. I found the schematics and I'm going back to my guitar guy to set it up the way it should be.

And maybe think about start using the vibrato unit, just for the fact that you can. ;)

So I had the blocks removed and the Comanche set up to the G&L specs. All kinds of good tonal variety now which is why I bought this guitar in the first place.
