Asat Z3 or Comanche?

The place to discuss, post photos, video, and audio of the G&L products (US instruments, stomp boxes, etc.) produced after 1991, including the amps & gear we use with them.

Asat Z3 or Comanche?

Post by crfowler »

Right now this is kind of an 'aspirational' post. I'm on my 3rd & 4th G&Ls right now. I used to have an S-500 and ASAT special from the Tribute series. Those are long gone, but I now have a George Fullerton sig and a US made ASAT special semi-hollow.

I live outside the USA right now but travel back often, and have set my sights on going guitar shopping next time I'm over. I'm pretty sure I want something with z-coils. Is the choice between a Z3 and a Comanche as simple as "Are you a T-type or an S-type" kind of person (or "do you need a trem?"). What else factors in to the decision? Wiring?

i think that's about it. the wiring is not an issue, you can always change it if it were.

Yes, strat v. tele. I prefer the Comanche for the vibrato and the PTB tone controls. And the 12" radius and the ergonomics etc.

Will Ray once told me that he thought the Comanche sounded brighter than his Signature.

As louis cyfer already pointed out, the wiring could be changed and so one could implement all 3 controls on an ASAT too.
Fretboard radius is an option for US models. My 3 ASATS do all have 12" radius fretboards.

So what's left, is the vibrato system and the shape of the body, as you already wrote, but which both does result in different sounds. For my ears, my Comanche sounds very like a strat, although with more fat tone, but still strat and not only in the in-between-positions. ;)

At my Tribute Comanche, there's this capacitor, named as "C3" in the diagram, in the circuit too. This one just cuts of high frequencies. It may depend on, if it's in a particular instrument or not.
