Bought my ASAT 'new' in 2011 - it was made, I think, in '88!

Hello to all,

I have been driving myself nuts waiting to tell the story of my ASAT and find out what other nuts think! I bought my guitar on EBay in 2011 - including case candy. BUT, it had been sitting in a closed down guitar business since it was made in around 1988! i've checked the photos, and it looks like a Broadcaster, but it's an ASAT. Please please tell me what I've got. It's logged in the registry and I'm going to put some better pics in the gallery. I've gigged with it once and will take it out again, but it scares me as I'm not sure what I've got....

Any comments advice welcome....

What you have is an "ASAT" in Black finish.

That's a great find for a late-80s ASAT. The plastic string tree being down by the E tuner places this no earlier than the end of 1988, and the "by Leo Fender" decal (I think I can see) at the end of the headstock places it no later than '91 or very early '92.

These are very sweet guitars. I don't normally care for black finishes, but I have two '86 ASATs in black and love how the finish works with the hardware on this model. There's still a chance in the late 80s that the body could be maple, which IMO works very nicely with these pickups.

Thanks for all the positive and helpful replies. I'm trying to get more pics on the site when I find my way around better. I also have the '80's leaflet (as new), the tag with Mr Fender's photo, the owner's manual and the ticked quality check ticket, which I'll photo and post.

We all started with one G&L. In case you haven't been warned yet, these things can be addictive...

You found a great one to start off with. IMO, a 1980s ASAT with a good setup is just about the best electric guitar you'll ever experience. I sold my '88 Candy Apple Red ASAT a couple of months ago when the El Toro I'd been watching for popped up for sale. I only decided to sell that ASAT because I had picked up the '86s along the way and they were getting more playing time.

With a good setup and the pickup heights dialed in just right, you should be able to get an endless range of tones out of your ASAT. I usually dial the volume back about 20% and adjust the tone for what I'm playing. That covers a lot of bases, especially with the neck pickup in the mix. I'd love to hear about settings that work nicely on yours.
