Replacement choices for neck pup in Legacy..?

The place to discuss, post photos, video, and audio of the G&L products (US instruments, stomp boxes, etc.) produced after 1991, including the amps & gear we use with them.

Replacement choices for neck pup in Legacy..?

Post by pico peachy »

Howdy G&L Friends. Looking for some help. Is there a neck pickup that I can pick up at my local shop (that is, something widely available like a Seymour Duncan) that would match well, output wise, with the middle pickup of my Legacy HB..? I am playing a FrankenLegacy these days-it's a '95 body with a Tribute neck. (There is a slightly interesting story behind this guitar and I love the 9" radius neck) There is some sort of SD rails in the neck position right now and I would like a single coil (I think it would make my new Princeton Reverb RI very happy). For the life of me, I can't find the stock neck pup anywhere at my house and now I am not sure if I ever had it as it was years ago when I put this guitar together.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Maybe I am over thinking this but my thought was that I would need something with high output like the middle pup. While I would love to stick a G&L pup back in there, I was hoping to do something today and also like to experiment.

On a slightly separate note, as it is now, when this guitar is set in the position between the middle G&L pup and the neck SD pup, the output drops waaaaay off. Did I wire it wrong or do these two not like each other..?

Hey Pico, good to see you again. There's a lot of choice out there for pickups! I've found SD's to be as good if not better than all the boutique brands I've tried, so that'd be a good place to start. I agree that you'd need something relatively hot to balance with the humbucker.

It sounds like you've wired it wrong. Try swapping the wires around on the neck pickup and see if that solves it.

Thanks Jaimie, I picked up a SD SSL-1 and it is just what I needed.

I've been playing a FrankenLegacy that I built years ago. I gave it to a neighbor for her son but was offered it back after it sat on his bedroom wall for years. It's 1995 body with a Tribute neck. Humbucker in the bridge. I am really diggin' the 9.5" radius neck. Would love to try one of the wider necks on it since I am playing fingerstyle exclusively these days. I believe my technique really benefited from only playing bass, exclusively fingerstyle, for the last year.
