Heavier gauge strings...

Post by ejharris »

Guys,

Here's another dumb question. I have a 2012 Special Collection S-500. It had the light 110 strings on it. I wanted something a little heavier so I went to a 115 set. The heavier strings are biasing the vibrato in and it is a bitch to tune. What should I do? Can I adjust the springs on the vibrato?

Thanks,

Jay

Absolutely Jay. You most definitely need to increase the string tension by turning in the screws. But in all honesty, that is only one step you'll need to do. The larger string gauge will also affect your neck relief and intonation. So in effect you'll need a complete new setup job done.

Hope this helps,

Okay, that makes sense. I guess that this is the excuse that I needed to get a set up done. I don't trust myself to do it.

I'm using that Daddario EXL115 strings on all my electrics for years and after a correct setup, everything's fine. :)
