G&L ASAT Classic Alnico

Post by serobnson »

I have not read many reviews about the ASAT Classic Alnico. Since it has been out for some time, any owners out there who care to review this axe?

Check this post: G&L announces the new ASAT Classic Alnico ....

I'm pretty sure Darwin (or was it his bandmate?) who got one of the Launch editions (pine body and special finish) and I think he posted a
review. Try the Search function.

Hope this helps.

I will give it a shot. The normal Asat Classic is bright and very defined as all G&L pickups seem to be. I have several classics and the Alnico is by far my favorite. The Alnico is very sweet and lush with rich overtones. It is not dark at all and is very well defined but the sweet overtones are unbelievable. I also have a Bluesboy with the Seth Lover and a matched Alnico in the bridge. The bridge also has those sweet overtones. I am a clean player, no distortion so I have no idea how they would be if overdriven. Maybe someone else here can comment on that. I was talking to the owner of AGB, the G&L dealer here, today and he commented that the new Alnicos were his favorites. I have the Pine Launch Edition and my bandmate has the Anico Classic.-- Darwin

I think Jos has also posted comments/reviews. Search under "Yowhatsshakin".

The ASAT Classic Alnico is definitely worth checking out. Beautiful sounding pups, and sonically very much distinguishable from the MFDs in the ASAT Classic. To my ears, the pups sound brighter than those in the ASAT Classic proper, but It seems Mr Gagon has found a way to tame the icepick while retaining the sparkle, shimmer, and spunk we have come to expect from a Tele. I think Darwin hits it on the head with his description of 'lush' overtones.

Thanks for all of your feedback. Curious about a couple of things...How does the Ash compare to the Pine? Also, how did you get a matched Alnico for your Bluesboy? Did you have to Custom order the guitar this way? We don't have many G&L dealers where I live, the only dealer I could find has a G&L bluesboy with the MFD in the bridge. I am debating on ordering a G&L with alnico pickups - I don't dig the MFD's - too dark sounding for my taste.

I think the Pine is a bit more mello than the ash. I did a comparison a while ago with the Pine and the Equatorial Mahogany. I thought the EM had more sustain unplugged but in plugging them into the amp, the Pine had more sustain. The EM is chambered with the f hole so it is louder unplugged. The Pine is solid and has a belly cut. It is one of the finest guitars that I have owned. The Alnico on the Bluesboy is a special order and would have not happened if it had not been for the dealer whom I ordered from. They insisted on it! I was initially told that it couldn't be done.Today when I was taking some pictures for a lunch report, I couldn't get over how beautiful this Pine Launch Edition is. It sounds as good as it looks. It is also quite light in weight. -- Darwin
