Trem bar falls out

Post by TELEZEE »

Hi All,

I recently acquired a mid 90's Legacy and have noticed that during the gigs or rehearsals, the trem bar works it's way out and i hear a clatter at my feet as it hits my pedal board.

It seems tight when I push it in, but then, "clang". i notice a split on the insert end...should that be spread a little (carefully)?

Are you missing the tension screw for the socket, or the bushing that fits in the end of the screw? These tend to disappear over time. Sets of new ones are available from the G&L on-line store.

I did notice a set screw on the barrel of the socket...is this the thing you are talking about?

Your trem bar has a split? Shouldn't be, I have one with a split too, but that's for a G&L from the first years in the 80's and that is slightly different and has another socket.

Your trem bar should look like this:

And the set screw you saw is to be tightened. I have mine tightened as far as the trem bar starts to stay in place, wherever I leave it while playing. For the nylon insert, the bar can be pulled out an pushed in again, as it is, without loosening the screw.

Had my Legacy looked over by my local guitar tech and we tried the tension screw and it seems to have done the trick. The bar is a split end type, the guitar is a 93 (ish) vintage, but I got it used and it's what came with it.

BTW, the guitar tech was impressed by the condition of the 20 year old, everything checked out nicely. A little pick-up adjust and intonation tweek.

It has a SD L'il 59 split coil humbucker in the bridge, but has a small toggle below the blade switch that I need to think over (maybe a push/pull instead)
