switch tip
Hey all ... I'm new to this forum and a happy new owner of an asat classic in candy apple metallic red with tortoise p/g. I'm not sure of the year,,i traded a guitar with somebody and they had it custom ordered the way they liked and never bonded with the weight of the swamp ash body. Anyway's some questions, the toggle switch tip pulls off very easy and if i'm playing aggressively,,it can fall off. Any idea's besides a drop of superglue.lol?
Secondly on the volume pot there seem's to be nothing going on between 0-5 when rolling back the knob. The knobs feel great and I love the durability of them but shouldn't there be more of a volume sweep? I will post some pic's later, the guitar in is showroom brand new condition and so is the G&L case that it came in. I love the pup's and the neck fit's like a glove. I have always known about g&l's but never had an opportunity to get the one I want and now I do, she's a keeper.
If I remove the neck will that tell me the date of the guitar or is there more to it, I read on here that they grab parts from bins and you can't just go by the neck pocket date, any truth? I have run the serial number through the database but it didn't show up. The pup's are wound hot too I believe and has sperzel tuner's on it. Also do all asat classics come with a bone nut or no? thanks if anyone can help me out.. Oh one last thing, what kind of tone differences will I get by using the allen key that came with the pickup's, I see they can be adjusted? i'm loving the way she sound's so I will leave well enough alone but I am curious. Thanks again

Re: switch tip
you have an audio taper volume pot. at 5 it only has 10% of it's value. i hate those. i prefer linear, at 5 you have 50% of value. on the audio taper you have 50% at 9.

Re: switch tip
the tip keeps coming off of mine as well, I just keep trying different ones to find a tighter one.
I had the same problem with the pot on mine so I replaced the pot but at the same time replaced the cheap cap with a good one. HUGE difference in the quality and tone from the guitar. Amazing for a $10 fix. Pot works terrific now.
I dont know about tweaking the pups since mine sounds great the way it is, havent touched it.
Mine came with a bone nut, there is also an option of graphtec nut, but that would have to be specified. My legacy has a graphtec nut and I love it.

Re: switch tip
thx for the replies, Yes i will definitely get the pot switched out, i hate the taper on it. I love the sound of my pup's just as they are as well, I was just curious what moving those lil hex screws would do for the tone. I will leave a good thing alone for once on this guitar. I wonder why they would use a pot like that, the original owner hated it as well, I mean you have no real room for rolling back volume.

Re: switch tip
I had that problem on a Tele. What I did was just wrap a bit of tape around the metal end of the switch tip before putting the plastic tip on. Never had a problem after that.the toggle switch tip pulls off very easy and if i'm playing aggressively,,it can fall off.
I don't know what kind of volume pot came on my 2011 ASAT Classic but I seem to have a full range of volume adjustment throughout the entire sweep of the knob.Secondly on the volume pot there seem's to be nothing going on between 0-5 when rolling back the knob.

Re: switch tip
Yes I believe I have an audio taper for sure, strange thing is the tone pot has full sweep. I wonder why they would have used an audio taper. I am trying to think of a positive reason for having it and just cannot think of one, i use a lot of tweed's and constantly work my volume knob so I have to get the linear pot in there stat. I am really diggin the mfd pup's in my classic, i have never played through them before and they really rip, I think the original owner had them wound a tad hotter, they really open up but I can tame them very easily.
I will try a piece of tape for a temporary fix but where would I get a more solid switch tip? I figure they would have used a nice tip on this gorgeous guitar but it probably slipped by.Curious what kind of tape did you use?
Edit: after actually using the volume knob for awhile, I have actually gotten used to it. I know I sound crazy from my last post but I think I like the quicker change, I don't have to roll the knob so much.lol... I will shut up and play.

Re: switch tip
Can't remember for sure--could have been just a bit of cellophane-scotch tape, not much at all, like maybe just one wrap--just something to enlarge the end very slightly so the tip can't slip off. It sounds like a cheesy way to fix it, but it does work.Curious what kind of tape did you use?

craig, that thread is full of misinformation. not a single person got it right. people are confusing the 2, getting it backwards half the time. i would not recommend that thread unless you want to confuse someone more. basically a bunch of idiots.Craig wrote:This might be of interest: Audio Taper vs. Linear Taper (whats what) and Cap Questions ...gadgetfreak wrote:Yes I believe I have an audio taper for sure, strange thing is the tone pot has full sweep. Re: switch tip
It's all good on the pot's. I understand the difference between the two.. Thanks for looking out..
I'm trying to date my guitar and the body say's Oct 1, 2005. I understand this is not a fool proof way of dating. Would they have used this body in a build much closer to 2005 than say 2010? Another thing I have learned is in 2011 they started using metal plates with the serial numbers on them, I do not have one of these but I do however have a serial number starting with CLF. I don't know if that helps narrow down the date, when did they start the clf serial's without the metal plate.
If anyone has more information that I may have missed I would appreciate it, I love the guitar and would like to at least know the year of it. I know every detail of the guitar but the year. Thanks

Regarding serial numbering, especially those starting with "CLF", see Serial number significance.gadgetfreak wrote:It's all good on the pot's. I understand the difference between the two.. Thanks for looking out..

By the early 2000's (and perhaps earlier), the factory was building instruments based upon orders received.
So, the body and neck dates would be fairly close to each other. So, the completion year of your guitar is likely 2005.
Hope this helps.

Re: switch tip
Hey Craig I appreciate the input, Thank you... When I have some natural light tomorrow I will post some pics. I've alway's really played my guitars and they get battle wound's. I have a feeling this one has been in the back of a closet. I've never seen a guitar so clean that wasn't off the showroom floor... and the case that it come's in is absolutely impeccable. Not a scratch or mark on it and still has that new shine. I'm really pinching myself on this acquisition here, very happy.

Re: switch tip
I happened to find a video that talks about differences in pots and their taper. Hopefully someone will find this useful. I suspect the audio track has been compressed which means that you won't hear the differences accurately.

Ha that's funny I have seen that video a long time ago myself, god knows what I was up to then if I was seeking out videos like this. Thanks for the post
I am having some issues posting pics... I have read about the file size and tried doing it with timage= but only the code showed up,no pics. do I have to actually put in the size?

you have to specify the size with timagegadgetfreak wrote:Ha that's funny I have seen that video a long time ago myself, god knows what I was up to then if I was seeking out videos like this. Thanks for the post
